EMPOWERING VICTIMS Plaintiffs’ Path to Justice Starts Here

Natalie Selzer seconds Laritta’s advice. “Don’t wait to call an attorney. It is better to call us first and ask a question than to try to guess and do it on your own,” she says. A 2018 graduate of the American University Washington College of Law, Natalie joined us in 2021, bringing a background in personal injury and criminal defense cases. She has compassion for those who are injured, listening to their experience and describing it in skillful language that evokes sympathy and understanding from judges and jurors. Rely on Experience. A results-driven attorney, Anaek (Nick) Johal encourages underrepresented individuals to draw upon his expertise for help in securing access to the courts and getting the justice they deserve. He takes pride in providing unique solutions to complex issues. A 2016 graduate of Howard University School of Law, Nick helps clients navigate personal injury, divorce, child custody, business law, intellectual property, and criminal defense matters. The bottom line, adds Daniel Szieber , an attorney with our firm since 2020, is to trust your instincts. Daniel, who has negotiated many cases and knows the ins and outs of both plaintiffs’ and defendants’ perspectives, believes in standing with those who have been injured. A graduate of the Florida Coastal School of Law, he is well-prepared to help individuals in car accidents, slip-and-fall cases, and other civil litigation. “If you think you need a lawyer,” Daniel says, “you probably do.”

Our firm has come a long way since its founding 15 years ago. From humble beginnings as a one-man office where I did every job, from emptying waste baskets to litigating cases, Malloy Law Offices, LLC, has expanded to seven attorneys with 10 locations throughout Virginia, Maryland, and the Washington, D.C., area. At Malloy Law, we have always been driven by a sense of purpose. I had worked for other large law firms before going out on my own, but I had my fill of representing wealthy clients. I wanted to take the other side, with a laser focus on helping people who were hurt by someone else’s negligence or recklessness. We have kept that focus on personal injury cases while expanding our capabilities to include Social Security disability issues, workers’ comp claims, premises liability, and complex business law and commercial litigation. Our team members are all dedicated litigators, devoting 90%–100% of our time to litigation. And we produce results, recovering more than $150 million for our clients so far. To provide insight into how we achieve those results, I asked each of our attorneys for their No. 1 piece of advice to prospective clients. Seek Counsel Early. Attorney Aleksandr Shubin , who joined the firm in 2011, represents victims in personal injury cases, auto accidents, and premises liability claims, as well as advising new businesses. A 2007 graduate of the George Washington University Law School, Aleksandr says his

clients often need help complying with the statute of limitations. In addition to filing claims within one, two, or three years of an incident, plaintiffs may be required to give notice within 60 days of their intent to file a claim. Thus, victims should secure representation right away. “Meeting these requirements might be as little as a 10-minute job for a lawyer,” Aleksandr says, “but failing to do so could become a barrier to any recovery of damages.” Stephen Caramenico , an attorney with us since 2018, agrees. “This initial decision about timing could have a major impact on the outcome,” says Stephen, a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. “Letting us guide you at the outset of your case will give you the best chances of success.” Stephen represents clients injured in auto accidents, slips and falls, and work-related accidents and also has defended people in traffic cases and other criminal matters. Avoid Insurers. A graduate of the St. John’s University School of Law, Laritta Oligie joined our firm in 2018. She advises prospective clients to avoid speaking with insurance companies or claims adjusters. “My No. 1 piece of advice for clients is to speak with an attorney first, they will show you the best way to move forward,” she says. Laritta defends clients in premises injuries, motor vehicle accidents, dog bites, and hair and nail salon issues, striving always to exceed clients’ expectations and uphold the highest standards of ethics and professionalism.

Panera Bread, a popular chain known for its fresh bakery offerings and wholesome meals, has recently found itself in hot water over a series of wrongful death lawsuits related to its caffeinated energy drinks. These tragic incidents have raised concerns about product liability and consumer safety, prompting individuals to question what steps they should take if ever involved in similar scenarios. Product liability refers to the legal responsibility of manufacturers, distributors, and sellers to ensure that their products are safe for consumer use. When a product causes harm or injury due to defects in design, manufacturing, or labeling, the parties involved may be held liable for damages incurred by affected individuals. In the case of Panera Bread’s caffeinated energy drinks, the lawsuits allege that the beverages contained dangerously high levels of caffeine, leading to adverse health effects and, in some instances, wrongful death. These allegations underscore the importance of rigorous quality control measures and accurate labeling practices to prevent harm to consumers. If ever involved in a situation where a product has caused injury or wrongful death, individuals should take the following steps to protect their rights and seek recourse: Seek Medical Attention If you or a loved one experiences adverse health effects after consuming a product, seek medical attention immediately. Document any symptoms and treatment received, as this information may be crucial for establishing a connection between the product and the resulting harm. Panera Bread Faces Leg

WD-40 does just about everything. “If it moves but shouldn’t, use duct tape. If it won’t move but should, use WD-40” is practically an American proverb. It stops squeaks, cleans steel, and separates stuck objects. But it can do even more than that: Repel insects. Bugs don’t like the scent of WD-40, plus it can kill them by suffocation. Cheaper than most insecticides and infinitely more versatile, a can of WD-40 is perfect for keeping bugs out of your house. Doors and Windows Insects invade your house through every opening, including the crack in the front door. Keeping them out can be next to impossible unless you take precautions. One such safeguard is to spray WD-40 underneath the doorframe as if it were a barrier between your world and theirs. You should also spray it underneath windows and anywhere else they might come in. Roofs and Vents Insects love roofs. They can invade many nooks and crannies in your roof, such as vents and cracks, but WD-40 can help prevent it. Spray it on any points of access, including the gutter. Many gutters have hot air vents, a popular entrance for spiders. Try spraying the soffit — where the roof overhangs — to deter wasps and other creatures from building nests. When and Where Not to Use WD-40 There are a few limitations to WD-40. It doesn’t keep out flying insects, so flies, bees, and other winged bugs can still get in. Also, WD-40 isn’t a solution for infestations, so call a professional exterminator if that’s your situation. WD-40 is poisonous, so don’t spray it in the kitchen. The chemical is also toxic to animals, including your pets. If you have animals, only use WD-40 on surfaces they can’t access, such as window frames, but be extra wary about where your cats hang out. The Chemical for All Your Household Needs WD-40 is a surprising solution for many household challenges. It makes snow shoveling easier, cleans bird droppings, and more. If your household is a potential target for an insect invasion, a few sprays of WD-40 in key locations can help you protect the home from insects, ants, and possibly termites. Wrongful Death Lawsuits Shake Up the Popular Bakery Chain

Preserve Evidence Keep any packaging, receipts, or other documentation related to the product in question. This evidence may be essential for proving the product’s defectiveness or the manufacturer’s negligence in court. Report the Incident Notify the appropriate regulatory authorities, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), about the adverse event. By reporting the incident, you can help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future and hold the responsible parties accountable for their actions. Consult With Legal Professionals Contact an attorney who specializes in product liability and wrongful death cases. An experienced lawyer can assess your case, explain your legal options, and advocate on your behalf to pursue compensation for damages such as medical expenses, loss of income, and pain and suffering. Document Your Experience Keep a detailed record of the circumstances surrounding the incident, including when and where the product was purchased, how it was

3 FURRY HEROES

Sometimes, heroes come sans cape but with fur, paws, and a keen sense of smell. We’ve heard the stories of police dogs, bomb- sniffing dogs, and the German shepherd Trakr, who found the last survivor on 9/11. But even untrained pets and strays can be heroic. Meet Jack, a stray dog in New York City known for scavenging through dumpsters. One early morning, his routine search for food took a life-saving turn. Behind one of these dumpsters was a baby, wrapped in a blanket, vulnerable and alone. Instinctively and with remarkable gentleness, Jack picked up the baby in the blanket with his teeth. Whether guided by fate, an extraordinary sense of purpose, or just because it was the closest open business, Jack took the baby to the hospital. The nurses tried to shoo him away when he first ran through the sliding doors. One nurse, noticing the bundle in the dog’s mouth, was able to get close enough to retrieve the baby. Thanks to Jack, the baby received life-saving medical attention. In the 1920s, the remote town of Nome, Alaska, grappled with a deadly diphtheria epidemic. Children were dying, and the icebound city was inaccessible by plane or boat in the winter. The only way to deliver the needed antitoxins was by dog sled on the Iditarod Trail. Balto, a Siberian husky, received most of the fame, but Togo, another husky, led the team across the most treacherous part of the journey. These dogs delivered life-saving medicine in time and saved many of Nome’s children. Cats can be heroes, too, as proved by a calico cat who lived up to his name in the most unexpected way. One night in Mississippi, intruders were trying to break into a home. The house cat, Bandit, sensed the danger and sprang into action. The cat’s relentless scratching and tugging at its owner’s blanket finally woke him. Then Bandit led his human downstairs to discover the attempted break-in, which also scared away the intruders. Bandit proved that size and species don’t matter in heroism. In moments of crisis, these four-legged heroes rose to the occasion, not for glory or reward but out of pure love and loyalty. They are potent reminders of the courage and selflessness that animals are capable of. JACK, TOGO, AND BANDIT WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND

TRAILBLAZERS IN THE LEGAL WORLD Honoring Laritta and Natalie This month, we not only welcome warmer weather and the arrival of spring, but it’s also a time to reflect on and celebrate Women’s History Month. This annual observance pays tribute to the achievements and contributions of women throughout history.
