women, made peace with each other, and made offerings that brought back the light. In another version of this myth, the anger of the villag - ers spread to the Sun and Moon causing those luminaries to feud and create darkness in the skies. In that myth, Kuiyecoke and Puka Puka told the villagers they needed to forgo their feuds and become role models so the Sun and Moon would learn peace and harmony would be restored. Solar eclipses occur at the time of the new Moon when the Sun and Moon are in the same sign. In this case, both luminaries are in the sign of Aries. New Moon time periods represent the need to slow down and review our journey through life so we can determine if we need to make changes or start new ventures that enhance our path. As the energy of Aries is once again emphasized, the mythology told by the Batammaliba people becomes more significant. In the negative, Aries represents the god of war where anger rules. Yet, in the positive, Aries represents your life force and vitality that enables you to experience joy and relationships. At the time this eclipse occurs, the new Moon forms a conjunction to both Chiron and Mercury retrograde. This indicates you have a choice: You can continue behaviors in your life that increase anger and prevent you from finding happiness, or, you can create and encourage behaviors that attract more joyful experiences into your life. Chiron does represent either self-defeating behaviors where you bring harm into your life, or healing techniques where you bring harmony into your life. Mercury retrograde, also in the sign of Aries, represents your ability to reach into the past and determine which actions no longer work in your life and which actions generate more support. There is one other aspect the new Moon in this eclipse chart makes: a square to the planet Ceres. Ceres represents the ability to know when to compromise. It also emphasizes the importance of negotiating for what you believe in. While the square can indicate a sense of tension, this tension is one which can be used in your favor. care to travel) are Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Totality will even be seen in several Canadian provinces, such as Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. The rest of the United States as well as most of North America will see at least a partial eclipse. As a matter of fact, those of us living in the DC metro - politan area will see this partial eclipse starting at 2:04 pm EDT until 4:32 pm EDT. The maximum view here will be at 3:20 pm EDT when the maximum magnitude is 0.891. (Totality occurs at a 1.0 or greater magnitude.) The reason a total solar eclipse, especially one of this magnitude, is so emotionally intense is it invokes a primal reaction from all indi- viduals. When totality occurs, the world stops. Sunlight is gone. Birds stop chirping. Flowers start closing their buds. The air cools and you can feel this strange electricity in the air. Looking at the Sun’s rays at any time during the eclipse, other than at the precise moment of total- ity, can burn your retinas and cause blindness. Your psyche feels this “stop” of the world even though that amount of time is not as long as you think. In many cultures the myth is that local creatures eat the Sun, and a total solar eclipse is seen as a period of discord. However, among the Batammaliba people of Western Africa, the total solar eclipse rep- resents something different: the time period to put aside anger and make peace offerings to bring back the light. In one myth told to me years ago, Kuiyecoke and Puka Puka, the matriarchs of the village, did everything they could to bring peace to their world when the villag- ers became argumentative and combative. When their efforts went unheeded, the ladies darkened the sun and moon until the villagers were frightened enough to stop fighting. As a result they listened to the
