Seed Libraries and the Importance of Seed Sovereignty GREEN NEWS & VIEWS

pests, disease, and climate change. It can even help save lives.

BY CIARA O’BRIEN In the face of today’s agricultural challenges, the concept of seed libraries has emerged as a solution for preserving biodiversity and fos- tering climate resilience. A seed library is a place where local commu- nity members can get diverse plant seeds for free, and they are run for the public benefit. They allow individuals to access, borrow, and con - tribute to the preservation of heirloom and rare seed varieties. With the growing realization that seed preservation is vital to maintaining ecological balance, food security, and cultural identity, seed libraries are popping up all over the country and world. Seed libraries play a crucial role in conserving genetic diversity, a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture. Our globalized food system is dominated by monocultures and genetically modified crops — global - ly, seed is largely controlled by four agrochemical giants: Bayer-Mon - santo, BASF, Corteva, and Sinochem, all of which also produce pesti- cides and synthetic fertilizer. Local movements are fighting back with seed libraries, which serve as a place for gardeners and seed savers to care for heirloom and rare seed varieties; they help protect them from total extinction. So, why is seed biodiversity so important? Maybe you are familiar with the Irish Potato Famine. In the 1840s, the Great Famine was caused by a total failure of the potato crop, which many people relied on for food. Since Irish farmers were relying heav - ily on one potato variety to feed thousands of people, tragedy struck when that variety was infected by blight. This is why promoting the cultivation of diverse crop varieties is so important — it can contribute to the resilience of ecosystems, and help mitigate risks associated with

Navigating Challenges and Opposition While the benefits of seed libraries are widely acknowledged, they’ve also been faced with significant opposition and challenges. For starters, seed libraries often involve the sharing or exchange of seeds, which can conflict with the intellectual property rights of seed
