Natural Healing Mother Earth News Magazine Special Edition, 2023

Lauded by critics as “brave,” “authoritative,” and “highly readable,” Entering the Mainstream features stories and guided meditations that are as stimulating to the seasoned practitioner as they are accessible to the novice. It is equally valuable for mindfulness teachers, offering guidance and a range of tools to help lead individuals and groups in urban settings. This new book and Patricia’s first book, Eight Steps to an Authentic Life: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times , are available on amazon.com.

In this easy-to-read and informative publication, Mother Earth News lives up to its well-deserved reputation for thorough and reli- able research. Discussions include “what leads to a naturally health immune system”; “natural ways to reduce chronic inflammation” that can otherwise lead to problems such as cardiovascular disease; nat- ural, nontoxic options for managing chronic pain; “a wide range of benefits to our bodies and our brains from regular, vigorous work - outs”; “the vital importance of gut bacteria to everything from weight control to mental health”; “the connection between healthy digestion and a healthy thyroid to help balance the brain,” in addition to helpful lifestyle tips; plus “eleven habits happy people have in common,” in- cluding “the foods they eat and other choices they make.” Most people do not realize that “70 percent to 80 percent of our immune tissue is located in our digestive system. What we eat, there- fore, affects how our bodies fight illnesses.” A companion discussion of stress includes how and possibly why we respond differently to stressful situations. This book also includes “old-time herbal reme- dies” that “relieve stress in our daily lives by modifying and controlling our responses.” There are herbal treatments “that can also help balance body and soul.” Some remedies “target physical ailments while others address psychological concerns.” Motherworts, for example, “is a natural tran - quilizer.” Or “if stress ties you in knots and nauseates you, try fennel or lemon balm.” In addition, “tense and sore muscles generally respond favorably to cramp bark, while feverfew and willow bark work well for migraine and tension headaches.” The discussions are extensive and include numerous herbal options, as well as laughter. “Get silly. Laughter increases blood flow to the brain, raises endorphin levels, and lowers levels of stress hormones.” This special issue is filled with effective natural remedies and life - style suggestions passed down over generations, including “proven home remedies available in your kitchen cupboard; old-time herbal remedies to relieve stress; and simple, homemade remedies to add to your self sufficiency repertoire” including poultices, infusions, and tinctures for just about whatever ails you.
