MIND-BODY-SPIRIT
processing, possible. Within the shrill disorder of a sawmill is the bite of the chainsaw against bark, and behind that, the shimmering hiss of wind in pine needles. Behind the onion stalks and the ploughed earth, we can feel the O.M. (organic matter) of healthy earth, the buzzing ohm of moisture, loam, and air charged with positive ions, turning itself microscopically rich and dark. And behind that, we can see the earth before agriculture, the seemingly random interweaving of all those blooming cousins now we call weeds. How far back are you willing to let your imagination travel? Most of us, in our secret soul, know time is (mostly) a human illusion, a tool that organizes our surface lives. In the imagination, the limitations of time and space fade. The ordinary becomes magical. The seemingly singular becomes collective. And we can go even deeper, by letting the rewilding of the imagi- nation manifest through storytelling. Through art, writing, and other creative processes, the insights that rise from our imaginations be- come bridges to shared experience. Poets, painters, dancers, and other artists channel craft to bring the expansion of dream space into our shared lives, bringing us closer to Thoreau called “the tonic of wild- ness.” Consider Edvard Munch’s insight: “ Nature is not only all that is visible to the eye... it also includes the inner pictures of the soul.” It is the path towards healing ourselves and the world, each step unique to each of us. As poet Mary Oliver says, “So this is how you swim inward. So this is how you flow outwards. So this is how you pray.” What is prayer but connection with the divine? And what is the di- vine if not the generative, infinite wilderness of the sacred, from which everything flows. We must find those brave enough to embrace their wildness so we can learn from them and find the courage to rewild our - selves more and more deeply, knowing our roles, our responsibilities, and our true alliance. Then we can imagine solutions large enough to make real change, and real enough to enable us to take our best next step, for our own sake and all the cousins who share our planet. I’ll close with the wisdom of the storyhealer Clarissa Pinkola Es - tes: “Be wild; that is how to clear the river. The river does not flow in polluted, we manage that. The river does not dry up, we block it. If we want to allow it its freedom, we have to allow our ideational lives to be let loose, to stream…. That is creative life. Then the river will flow, then we can stand in the stream of it raining down.” Carol Burbank is a poet and non-fiction writer whose work ex - plores the intersections of social change, myth and ecology.
