PPC: What inspired you to work in design? DA: It’s been quite a journey, really. I’ve often heard stories about how critiquing a child’s creativity can stifle their imagination. You know, like when a kid shapes something out of Play-Doh, like a horse, and some- one remarks, ‘That doesn’t look like a horse, it’s more like a block.’ Well, I’ve been there. People sometimes fail to grasp the essence of creativity and can be critical of it. My parents, for instance, struggled to comprehend what creative professionals actually do. They couldn’t fathom that you could make a living through creativity, unlike conventional professions like doctors or lawyers. Yet, despite their initial skepticism, they supported my vision and dreams. I remember when I graduated from college with a degree in Art His- CONTINUED ON PAGE 16 The Paperboard Packaging Council supports talented designers through its Design & Innovation Community and celebrates their work through the annual North American Paperboard Packaging Competition, known in the industry as the “Oscars of Paperboard Packaging.”

MSU To Invest $25 Million In School Of Packaging Expansion Michigan State University announced its plans to expand the MSU School of Packaging. The $25 million invest- ment will double the size of the building and significant- ly increase research capacity, creating space for more faculty and graduate students. “Positioning Spartans for continued innovation and leadership, this new expansion to the nation’s preeminent School of Packaging is anoth- er milestone for this storied program,” said MSU Interim President Teresa K. Woodruff. “This addition signifies our commitment to research excellence and also underscores our dedication to staying at the forefront of industry trends and demands.” Housed within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the MSU School of Packaging in East Lansing consistently earns top rankings in its field. It was estab- lished in 1952 and was the first school of packaging in the United States. Today, it is the largest packaging program in the country, with over 600 undergraduate and graduate students and 10,000 alumni worldwide. The school grad- uates 40 percent of all the packaging professionals in the U.S. alone, creating a basis for industry influence that out- strips any other packaging program. “This expansion will create world-renowned sustain- ability research spaces so that we can expand our faculty
in this critical area,” said Matthew Daum, MSU School of Packaging Director and CANR Assistant Dean of Corpo- rate Relations and Strategy. “We are the only U.S. school that offers a Ph.D. program in packaging, so we’re partic- ularly excited this addition will allow us to bring in more graduate students to meet industry demand.”
The School of Packaging completed a comprehensive renovation in April 2023, which created technology-first classrooms, collaboration spaces where industry partners can engage with students and new office space for gradu- ate students and faculty. The renovations were supported by contributions from alumni and donors totaling over $10 million, including lead gifts from Amcor, Charles and Jack- ie Frasier and Ring Container Technologies. Officials plan to break ground in 2025.

Togeth- er, these industry advocates represented 13 companies from 53 locations across 18 states. The PPRC is a grassroots organiza- tion of hourly employees in the forest prod- ucts industry. Each year, it brings pulp and paper workers to the capital to speak with members of Congress and administrative officials at the U.S. Environmental Protec- tion Agency, the Office of Management and Budget and other government agencies about issues affecting American manufac- turing jobs in the industry. This year, industry advocates made 535 visits with members of Congress and ad- ministrative officials to discuss the effects of legislative and regulatory decisions on the environment and on people who make their living in forest products manufacturing. PPRC representatives and industry advo- cates discussed several issues with mem- bers of Congress including air permitting, forest management, recycling, beneficial use of paper mill residuals, water quality, and logistics of forest products.

Premier Packaging To Seek Women Business Enterprise Certification Jill and John Gaynor, owners of Louisville, Kentucky based Premier Packaging, announced they have completed a major prerequisite that will qualify the company to seek official Women Business Enterprise (WBE) certification. Effective March 1, Jill Gaynor, Chief Marketing Officer, will take on the roles of CEO and majority shareholder of the manufacturing and distribution company. As she assumes her new duties, current Premier Own- er and CEO John Gaynor will transition to President of the company. “As a female-owned and -managed business, Premier will now have minority-owned status that will open new business opportunities for us,” Jill Gaynor said. “We are excited about partnering with other companies including state and local governments to do what we do well — all things packaging.” “Jill has been involved in our business since day one, collaborating with me on every risk and decision,” said John Gaynor. “We will still collaborate together, but now Jill will take on the controlling leadership role within Premier.” Premier Packaging will celebrate 30 years in business this March. Based on 2023 data, Premier will rank as the 17th largest woman-owned/managed business in the country.
WBE certification by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council validates that a business is at least 51 percent owned, controlled, operated, and managed by a woman or women. Since its founding in 1997, the nonprofit organization has grown to become the largest third-party certifier of businesses owned, controlled, and operated by women in the United States and a leading advocate for women-owned businesses in corporate and government supply chains.
Started in Louisville in 1994, Premier Packaging has grown to locations across the United States, Canada, and Mexico by offering custom-made packaging and shipping solutions to its customers. Jill and John Gaynor, Owners of Premier Packaging

Employee Perks Include Pinball At Stafford Corrugated Products Video might have killed the radio star, but it didn’t kill the pinball machine, not at Stafford Corrugated Products anyway. When Tony D’Aprile, the company’s Founder and President, decided to share his passion for pinball by putting in two game rooms at the com- pany’s new headquarters in Indian Trail, North Carolina, his peers thought he was crazy. Productivity would go out the window, they said. D’Aprile, however, has found it to be quite the opposite with employ- ees now motivated to be more efficient in completing each day’s orders. “We’ve actually seen productivity go up,” he said.
Being a supplier to the corrugated industry since 1987 as opposed to a manufacturer also makes it easier to carve out time for in-house rec- reation, D'Aprile said. Stafford, which carries a large inventory, supplies about 60 percent of the US market with RODICUT anvil covers and is also a market leader in its machine part offerings. D’Aprile has found the pinball games to be an employee perk that wins more points in team building than distraction. Once employees have successfully completed all their picking and shipping orders for the day — with the goal to complete all orders every day — there is time left over for recreation as opposed to spreading work tasks out throughout an entire shift. The games are D’Aprile’s way of retaining employees and showing his appreciation. “Without our employees, we can’t do anything. They’re very important to us,” he said. As a pinball collector since the ‘90s, D’Aprile couldn’t fit any more in his game room at home so he started bringing them to work. Having moved into a larger, 50,000-square-foot headquarters within the same business park in 2022, there was plenty of room to turn one of the extra offices into a pinball room. They are now up to 20 different games includ- ing a classic Skee-Ball roller game. The most popular as well as challenging game currently is the Add- ams Family-themed pinball machine. While D’Aprile’s love of pinball is admittedly old school, one of the digital gamers on staff has developed a newfound appreciation for the mechanical and become the main con- tender for the title of pinball wizard at Stafford. “He’s totally blown away because you get the feel and the reaction of the machine — you can’t get that with video,” D’Aprile said.

use design as a means to make the world a better place, and to be happy and fulfilled while doing it. PPC: Why would you encourage someone to work in de- sign for the paperboard packaging industry? DA: In the realm of paperboard packaging design, we’re crafting solutions for products that fill our daily lives – from cereal boxes to pharmaceutical packaging. The versatility of paperboard as a substrate opens up endless possibili- ties for innovation. While I’ve worked across various materials like glass, plastics, wood, and metal, I find paperboard to have the most opportunities to make a meaningful impact. Take, for instance, a tissue box. When any of us reaches for a tissue in a moment of distress, the last thing that we need is a struggle with the packaging and the dispensing mechanism. That’s where the magic of design comes in – seamlessly integrating function with human experience.

I’ll be happy.’ And he actually said, ‘Well, that’s all that matters, right?’ I’ve always been drawn to cre- ativity and problem-solving, not just visually, but in all aspects. I see endless opportunities to make the world a better place through design. Whether it’s ar-

So, if you want to change the world that we live in as a designer, work in the paper- board industry. The opportunities are end- less to have a positive impact. There are also numerous roles you can take on in this field. You can begin your career as a designer, but there are many opportunities to branch out into different roles within the industry, including sales, manufacturing, customer service, or man- agement. Designers offer a unique perspective because they approach problems different- ly. Instead of relying solely on past experi- ences, they seek new ways to solve chal- lenges, which often leads to breakthrough innovations. This mindset is crucial not only in design but also in business and manufacturing. So, my advice is simple: start as a designer, and your career path is entirely up to you. PPC: What do you consider to be the most innovative trends or advancements in pack- aging design today? DA: Today, packaging design is all about making products work better for people. We start by understanding what users need and how we can solve their problems. For instance, think about tissue boxes again. We want to make sure you can grab a tissue easily when you need it most, with- out any hassle. We also consider if our ideas are real- istic and affordable to produce. With new technologies and smarter designs, we’re making packaging more inclusive and us-

PPC: Why should packaging professionals get involved with PPC? DA: PPC is an exceptional industry organization that drives progress across our entire field. I like to think of it as rais- ing the water level for everyone, which allows us all to nav- igate the rocks, or challenges, more easily. By coming together and sharing our successes and best practices in a supportive environment, we collective- ly elevate the industry. Moreover, PPC ensures a safe and compliant space for collaboration, addressing concerns such as anti-trust regulations. and reliable scrap collection systems and solutions. “2023 was a big year for the implementation of two in- novative products for the corrugated and folding carton industries – the MultiStar Filtration Systems for any air con- veying and dust collection application, and the PHSH Com- bination Shredder for the corrugated market. The former of the two, saw numerous systems installed across North America at both greenfield installs and existing buildings, bringing ‘negative pressure air conveying systems’ to the forefront in material recovery systems. “Negative pressure air conveying systems differ from ‘traditional’ positive pressure or ‘blow-thru’ air conveying systems. Negative pressure systems reduce the need for noisy material handling fans throughout your facility, sav- ing you valuable floor space. They ‘pull’ material through ductwork towards a low-profile material separator and bal- ing system, which reduces duct leakage and dramatically improves ambient dust levels throughout your plant from your scrap handling system. The negative pressure sys- tem is more efficient as it idles unnecessary air flow when not in use to reduce electrical consumption, while also ex- tending the life of filter media. “In addition to the MultiStar filtration systems, the second innovative product offering provided by Kernic and Hӧcker in 2023 is the PHSH Combination Shredder for large Corrugator Plant operations. The combination shredder incorporates your traditional conveyor fed sheet CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

stack automation. As a result of this, Bahmueller has en- tered into a cooperation with the most renowned provider of robotic solutions MuK from Elmshorn in Germany. This cooperation has already demonstrated its unique strength with the Bahmueller | MuK Performance Days that took place in November 2023. The independent sheet plant Liebensteiner, based in Bavaria Germany, was chosen as the location for this event, as three TURBOX lines were installed between 2014 and 2023, equipped with POW- ERPACKERs and MuK MukRo HE (HighEnd) palletizer. Two of the TURBOX lines are equipped with the outstanding MuKFEED Robotic Prefeeder. Liebensteiner is a forerun- ner in the use of the latest automation solutions, operating with up to 10 robots of MuK. “In addition to the comprehensive topic of automation, there are also small but not insignificant achievements that once again demonstrate the flexibility of Bahmueller and the TURBOX specialty folder gluer. Digital printing is a hotly debated topic, not just in the upstream production steps. Similar to solid board folding carton production, dig- ital and unique labeling is also being required more and more in the corrugated board converting segment. “Using a to the TURBOX SFG fully integrated inkjet sys- tem, graphics, logos or even bar- and 2D codes can be printed on the box during the folding and gluing process. This allows clear traceability of each individual box, sim- ilar to track and trace in the pharmaceutical area. There is no need for traditional self-adhesive labels. However, if the application requires this, as is the case in eCommerce packaging, Bahmueller can also offer a solution here. “The economical production of eCommerce packaging continues to be a topic that cannot be ignored. In order to do justice to the variety of different packaging designed and types, a flexible yet fast solution is required.
