Medicare Blueprint Advisors - March/April 2024

Heart disease claims the lives of approximately 647,000 Americans annually, making it the leading cause of death among both men and women. Certain factors increase the risk of developing heart disease, including age and family history. Men and women ages 55 and older, as well as individuals from families with a history of early heart disease, are also susceptible. While genetic factors are beyond our control, Medicare offers preventive measures to manage heart disease risk. Through Medicare’s preventive heart health benefits, individuals can access early screenings to detect health issues, enhancing treatment effectiveness. Many of these services are covered by Medicare Part B at no additional cost. Specifically, Medicare Part B covers cardiovascular screening blood tests, available once every five years, and cardiovascular behavior therapy visits, which individuals can schedule annually with their primary care doctor or in a primary care setting. These services monitor cholesterol, lipid, and triglyceride levels, identify conditions that may lead to heart attacks or strokes, and provide behavioral therapy to mitigate heart disease risk factors.
