wallpaper designer Milton & King, agrees. He notes a strong interest in murals that create a total immersion effect, particularly jungle patterns. People are frequently using murals to fill large spaces, too. “It’s really like an art installation,” Budd says. “We just did a dining room with a Phillip Jeffries mural all the way around it. The client spent quite a lot on the paper, but it negated the need for other artwork in that room.” Because wallpaper is an invest- ment, it’s wise to look beyond trends and select a look that has longevity. Incorporating statement-making wallpaper isn’t like wearing a bold shirt that can be easily changed, Budd warns. She encourages her clients to consider colors or textures they would like to see in the space and to determine whether the wallpaper will be the focal point or a backdrop. As every space is different, this could call for a simple, solid grasscloth that adds interesting texture or a vibrant floral print that bursts with expression. In addition to textured papers and bold florals, style options are virtually limitless these days, from geomet- ric and animal prints to nearly any design or subject imaginable. Where wallpaper can be used is just as all-encompassing; it is pop- ping up almost anywhere there’s a flat finish. It’s being used above chair rails, board-and-batten, and wain- scoting. S ocial media, Pinterest boards, and images of eye-popping projects on the internet have normalized risk-taking decor choices. Whereas in the past, people may have been hesitant to hang a large landscape mural in their bed- room or wallpaper their ceiling in a geometric pattern, constant expo- sure to bold, picture-perfect interiors has given people the courage to try out-of-the-box ideas. “People want what they see, and they’re less scared to do what they see a lot of,” says Ali Budd, president and principal designer of Ali Budd Interiors, based in Toronto. “Wallpa- per is an amazing way to add texture, color, pattern, and drama.” While the use of wallpaper with small repeats has been popular, Sara Malek Barney, founder and principal designer of the Austin, Texas–based Bandd/Design, believes there is a growing trend toward using large-scale murals as well as large pattern repeats. but doesn’t recommend covering the shelves themselves. “Wallpaper isn’t meant to be touched all the time,” she says. “If you’re gliding books in and out, you are going to ruin your paper.” As a starting point, powder rooms are often a popular place to dabble in the use of bold wallpaper. While the limited spaces can handle either small or large prints, they require attention to scale. “Make sure you have enough of a repeat on the paper,” Budd advises. “If the print is so big that you’ll only see swatches of it in different places, make sure whatever you select is

and panels are also popular. Budd recently designed a closet where all the doors were finished in mural paper and a bathroom where all the doors were covered. Capp also has seen a trend toward using wallpaper in unlikely places, such as in wood paneling, at the back of joinery, inside and outside cabinets, and on headboards. “While wallpaper is made for walls, we’re always delighted to see where people are choosing to use it,” he says. Budd supports being creative with placement but has some caveats. For example, she suggests wallpapering behind open shelving
