compatible so you see the full repeat.” Conversely, in large rooms, small- scale prints can end up looking busy on the wall, Capp says. If you’re working with a large space, then large prints or large pattern repeats can produce a better result. No matter the size of the room, be careful not to overdo it. Wallpaper shouldn’t overwhelm a space. “It’s all about balance—a yin to a yang,” Barney says. “If the pattern is bold or the scale is large, then the decor should be subtle and minimal.” While there is no chart to dictate

how to coordinate wallpaper with furnishings and accessories, a good designer can help decide proper balance. Capp recommends creating a theme or through-line to achieve a cohesive space. “You can use the colors in the wallpaper as the base for choosing the other elements, or make sure that the wallpaper has a color or pattern that complements your existing furnishings,” he says. “For example, if a space has a color scheme, make sure your wallpaper matches that palette. If a room has a lot of circular patterns, find a wallpaper design with a similar element.” In a monochromatic space, Budd suggests using different shades and adding texture to make the room feel “cozy, finished, and elevated.” Texture is another way to make a statement that works well for people intimidated by bold prints. “We’ve done projects where we inset paneling with texture, and that can be really beautiful,” Budd

says. “We’ve done ceilings and walls, separated by crown molding, in different textures or different tones of the same texture. There are so many different ways to play with it.” The practicality of paper place- ment also needs to be considered. Different textures and finishes might not work in certain areas, so select- ing the best product for the location is essential. For example, in a recent bathroom installation, Budd chose a paper that had a vinyl-like overlay texture and then added a special water-proof coating in order to protect against the environment. “Some wallpapers are more delicate than others,” Budd says. “You have to think about where you’re using it. In a washroom that has a shower, steam might make it peel off or damage it. It would be like putting an oil paint- ing in your bathroom. It’s not a good idea. Understanding what you use where—whether it’s wallpaper or anything else—is important anywhere in your house.” ■
