The company specializes. Of the “Pagoda” models, the 280SL is pre- ferred, and a 250SL won’t be turned away, but the relatively low-powered 230SL is not favored. Customers, a majority from the U.K. but also the U.S., Australia, and China, can follow the restoration of their car through a private portal. Mercedes has a long history, and some of the companies that custom-build their offerings focus on different eras. HWA AG, based in Affalterbach, Germany, has a fascinating history. Drum brakes can become discs. Wind-up windows can get powered—though to keep up appearances the controls will be those original winders. The evocative German radios look like stock, but have Bluetooth and other features. Hemmels, which has 40 employees, calls its rebuilding process “Neuge- boren” (new born), and there’s a tem- plate for each of the cars the company works on. Going through the process with the 280SL takes a full year—52 weeks. Just painting the car takes 10 weeks, Butterfield says. The pricing is standardized, starting at $489,000 and—depending on the extra work
