The technical specifications are still being finalized, but the tuned twin-turbo V-6 dry-sump engine is expected to produce at least 450 horsepower in a lightweight (via extensive use of car- bon fiber) platform. Drivers will stir a six-speed Italian-made gearbox. The EVO price will start at €714,000 (about

launched in the late 1960s. The origi- nal Evo “marked one of the first times Mercedes and AMG worked together,” von Schoening says. “There was no existing tuning business at the time. The spirit was ‘race on Sunday, sell on Monday.’ Mercedes was initially not very enthusiastic—'What are you doing with our beautiful cars?’ they said.” But Benz got very enthusiastic indeed and eventually bought AMG, the name attached to many of the company’s performance cars now. There are many places in the U.S. to get your classic Mercedes restored, including the Scott Grund for Com- pany and Silver Star Restorations. Mercedes operates its own Classic Workshop in Long Beach, Califor- nia. Like Hemmels, it will undertake complete restorations involving total disassembly and an exacting rebuild. The company says, “The quality- control standards the vehicle is subjected to during the restoration process may be even higher than when it was originally built.” ■

The EVO isn’t a restoration project, it’s a complete new car with optimized weight distribution and suspension in a different style.” The other projects are so far under wraps, but planning has begun. “The next seven to 10 years are planned out,” von Schoening says. So no, HWA will not take in customers’ Mercedes-Benzes and restore them. AMG was visionary when it
