THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL DAY AT THE OFFICE

I see many patients who fly in from all over the country and around the world. They often come to Beverly Hills on a tight schedule. On top of this, I handle many emergency cases, which can pop up at virtually any time. In running a successful practice, these instances present interesting challenges. The key to balancing diverse patients is organization. It’s about delegating and working with utmost efficiency. Within our office, we hire exceptionally competent people who are highly specialized for each role. These are duties that are very well-defined —more defined than you would find at an ordinary dental practice. Every member of our team knows what they need to do and when. They know what decisions they can make within the practice. Because I run the business side of the practice and serve as a dentist, my day can become very busy. However, because each staff role is clearly defined, my team doesn’t have to rely on me to approve any decisions that need to be made. They know what to do. To go along with that, we have a high level of trust among the team. Not only do we rely on one another when it comes to decision-making, but we also rely on one another to come up with solutions to tough problems. This may happen when we’re presented with an emergency case; we may need to act quickly to find a solution. Every member of the team needs to work cohesively so we can take care of the patient. When you emphasize organization within your personal or professional life, no matter what you face on any given day, it will likely go well. Everyone does what they need to do to provide a high level of patient care. Outside of the office, I use a number of different apps to stay organized. I also use Excel to help me visualize what I need to get done. In terms of travel, for instance, I rely on an app called TripIt Pro. It keeps all of my travel information in one place, from flight information to all my reservations. The app syncs with my email and allows me to keep a complete record of my travel in one place.

no wasting time searching, and I never have to worry about finding a specific document. I also use my iPad in a similar fashion. Everything is connected, and I can move from one device to the next instantly without losing information. I also have a morning routine that helps me get ready for the workday ahead. My day often begins at 6 a.m. with a cup of coffee as I read over the schedule of the day. I plan ahead and may look over patient and case information. Three times a week, I work out between 7 and 8 a.m. A good workout helps clear my head and keeps me focused. By 9:30 a.m., I’m at the office. Then, the team is ready to go, and we start work. Every piece is in place, and we can do what each of us does best.

Get the Most Out of Your Digital Home Assistant

More and more people are welcoming in the Amazon Echo or the Google Home into their spaces. Everyone knows they make great Bluetooth speakers and can tell you the weather forecast, but they’re also capable of so much more. Digital assistants can do a variety of tasks depending on how much you want them to do for you. For example, if you want your digital assistant to be heavily involved in your daily life, you can use the Echo or the Home as the core of your “connected home.” You can connect numerous compatible devices to these assistants, including other Bluetooth or networked speakers, lights, thermostats, coffee makers, refrigerators, and even microwaves. Of course, therein lies the challenge — you must have compatible devices to make a connected home efficient. And let’s be honest: Many of us aren’t going to buy a connected fridge or Wi-Fi enabled lightbulbs just to get the most out of our digital assistants. What you can do, however, is make use of what you already have. Here are some ways to put your digital assistants to work without committing to a connected home. BEFORE AFTER &

Both the Echo and the Home make excellent communication hubs. In the home, they can be used as a local intercom system. Do you have a few Echo Dots or Google Home Minis? If you do, you’re set. You can communicate in any room where another device is present. Your digital assistant can also make outgoing calls. As long as the device has access to your contacts (or the person you’re trying to contact has an Echo or Home), you can easily make the connection. Want to send a text message? No problem! You can dictate a text to anyone in your smartphone’s contact list and send it without ever touching your phone. Aside from communications, the assistants can handle calendars, appointments, emails, and more. You can ask for information relevant to you, like “When is my flight again?” Google Home can recognize your voice, or the voice of anyone in the house, and respond accordingly. There’s no worry that anyone’s calendar or appointments will be mixed up with yours.

Manage Your Jaw Pain Tips for Easing the Symptoms of TMD

• Apply an ice pack to ease the pain and reduce inflammation (wrap it with a thin cloth to keep it from touching the skin). • Try sleeping on your side. • Relax the jaw by consciously unclenching and taking deep breaths. • Eat soft foods. Some medical professionals prescribe an oral splint to stabilize the jaw and reduce pain. But in one recent clinical trial at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University, they found that therapeutic jaw exercises helped patients recover faster from TMD symptoms than splints. A physical therapist can show you similar exercises that will reduce your TMJ pain. The effectiveness of surgical treatments to address TMJ disorders is still unclear, so talk to your dentist or medical provider to see what kinds of less invasive treatments are available. While there is such a thing as a TMJ specialist, there are many treatments that come from

It’s a strange feeling for anyone who’s experienced it: waking up to find that your jaw is extremely sore, maybe even to the point where

you can’t fully open or close your mouth. Sufferers report various degrees of discomfort, but anyone who knows how it feels agrees that temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain hurts. When it becomes chronic, it is referred to as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). There are still no definitive answers as to what causes TMJ, though doctors believe stress, anxiety, bruxism (an unconscious grinding of the teeth), and joint imbalances

may all contribute. Most cases last a few weeks, but if you suffer from TMJ for longer than that, you should consult your dentist or physician. If you’re waking up with jaw pain, there are a few things you can do to manage the symptoms at home. Here are some suggestions from the Temporomandibular Joint Association (TMJA) and the Mayo Clinic:

varying schools of thought and are not always based on scientific evidence. Working with your general dentist may be just as effective for you. Some patients have found relief through the TruDenta treatment program, which combines massage therapy, cold laser therapy, microcurrents, and ultrasound to treat the symptoms of TMD. Others have found acupuncture and other forms of alternative medicine to be effective. Given all the options, the first step to address your jaw pain is to educate yourself so you can make the TMJ treatment decision that is right for you.

Apply a moist heat compress to the jaw to reduce pain and increase function.

Set Sail for Vacation Take Your Next Vacation Offshore

If you’re lucky enough to have been aboard a ship under full sail, chances are you know the thrill and serenity sailing can give you. If you’ve never been but have always wanted to know what it’s like to get out on the wind and waves, there are many great options available for beginners. Here are some ideas to inspire your next waterside vacation. Start Small For those who dream of becoming a skipper one day, a great way to start is by sailing dinghies. These one-sail, beach-launch boats fit 1–2 people and can be rented at most water sports shops. If you want to make it a family experience, shops usually have 16-

foot catamarans for rent as well. Catamarans have two hulls rather than one, making for a smoother, more spacious ride. If you’ve never sailed before, inquire about lessons. Most rental operations have instructors on hand who can show you the ropes. The great thing about sailing is that whether you’re in a 12-foot dinghy or a 60-foot sloop, the same basic principles, rules, and skills apply. Take a Day Sail Many day-sail charters exist for those who want to go out a little farther than a dinghy would permit. If you’ve captained a boat and are familiar with the waters, you can apply

for a bareboat charter. However, if you are inexperienced or simply don’t want a local guide at the helm, signing up for a day trip with a skipper and crew is a great option. Do a Full Charter Short of owning your own vessel, chartering a boat for multiple nights is the closest you can get to living out your nautical dreams. Some of the most beautiful destinations on earth — from the Caribbean Sea to the Mediterranean — are best experienced from the deck of a sailboat. Letting the sea guide you to amazing snorkeling destinations, remote cays, and bustling harbors is the stuff of real adventure.
