December, 1936

Christmas night, long, long ago, when the angels told the shepherds about the manger in Bethlehem where lay the little Lord Jesus. John wants us to remember that long years before this happened, the Lord Jesus was really living. The very first words of John’s Gospel tell us that in the beginning Jesus was with the Father. The Father and the Son were one, and together they lived in heaven until the time came when the Father should send the Son to the world to be the Saviour of the world. God promised His people that He would give His Son, and for many years they had waited for H im ; and then, when He came, a sad thing happened. Many of the waiting people would not believe that Jesus was the Christ, the Saviour sent from God. Even though God sent John the Bap tist to say that the promised Son was com ing, still many people would not believe. If you were expecting a gift and it came, and some one even brought it to you and told you that this was the gift you were expecting, and still you didn’t take it, wouldn’t that be a strange thing?

Object Lesson S h in in g S ilverware

Objects: A tarnished silver spoon, a wide-mouthed quart jar filled with hot soda water, and a cross cut from aluminum. (Paint one side of the cross red. Use about two heaping tablespoonfuls of baking soda to a quart of water.) Lesson: Do you boys and girls like to shine silverware? I don’t suppose you would like to shine this spoon, as it is badly tai 1)nce it was clean and bright, but now it looks dirty. It reminds me of people whose lives have been black ened by sin. W e will let this jar of hot water remind us of a church. W e will put the tarnished spoon in the church and see whether it is changed. (Have a thread tied to the han dle of the spoon so that it can easily be pulled out of the jar.) No, it is just as tarnished as ever. There must be some thing lacking in this church, if the sinner is not cleansed. Oh, I see, there is no cross and no Christ, and, of course, the sinner cannot be cleansed from sin without Him. Here is a red cross, reminding us of the cross on which Jesus died, and His red blood that was shed for the sins of the world. As long as the cross is on the out side of the church, no matter how close it comes, the spoon still remains tarnished. W e will put the cross on the inside of the church and see what happens. As soon as it touches the spoon, the spoon is cleansed. As soon as sinners contact Jesus Christ and accept Him as Saviour, their lives are changed. W e are reminded of the words of John 1:12: “ But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the
