JANUARY 3 D o It!. "tVhatsoever he saith unto you, do it” (John 2:5). W e believe that the time has come for doing more fully what He has commanded us; and by His grace we intend to do it. Not to try, for we see no Scriptural author ity for trying. “ T ry” is a word constantly in the mouths of unbelievers. “W e must do what we Can,” say they, and that phrase is far too often taken up by believers. In our experience, “ to try” has usually meant “to fail.” The word of the Lord in reference to His various commands is not, “ Do your best,” but “ Do it”— that is, do the thing commanded.— J. H udson T aylor . In the life of faith God never builds bridges before us; He always builds them under our feet, as we step forward on thin air!— S elected . JANUARY 4 Warmth and Light “For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness” (Psa. 18:28). No matter what your present feeling may be, or how great your want of feeling, no matter how indifferent you may be, or how dark as regards all Christian subjects, set your times of prayer, not for a mere experi ment, but as a fixed appointment, never to be discounted. Go to it in the cold to get heat. Go to it in the dark to wait and watch for the light. Go to it without inclination, pleading the promise o f God’s Spirit to give you inclination. . . . God will be waiting on His part to open the gate for you; to greet,' accept, and bid you everlasting welcome. — H orace B u sh nell . Oh, come to this valley of blessing so sweet, Where Jesus will fullness bestow; And believe and receive and confess Him, That all His salvation may know. — S elected . JANUARY 5 Singular Suffering “He is brought as a lamb to the slaugh ter” (Isa. 53:7). Never once was He gently led. He was led into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. He was led by men filled with wrath to the brow of the hill, that they might cast Him down headlong. He was led away to Annas; led away to Caiaphas; led into the council of the elders and chief priests and scribes; led to Pontius Pilate, and into the hall of judgment. And then He, our Lord Jesus Christ, was led as a sheep to the slaughter; led away to be crucified! Verily, “ His way was rougher and darker than mine.” — F rances R idley H avergal .

JANUARY 1 God’s Glean Slate

"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you” \ Ezek. 36:26). God has never asked any one to turn over a new leaf. At the beginning of ev ery new year when man sighs for a clean slate, and when he determines to “ turn over a new leaf,” the W ord of the Lord comes with increased meaning, “ I will give new life.” There is something within us that strives for attainment, but God offers His perfect plan of atonement. The world says, “W e must do better this year. W e will try!!’'; The Lord Jesus, with the scars of Calvary on His hands and feet and brow and side, pleads, “ It is done! Trust M e !” Friend, if you have resolved fo be stronger this year, if you have vowed to try your best, will you not listen to the Word of the Lord as it comes with force to you? You long for a new start? Let God give you a new heart V’^ T h e Pilot. Prevent my ever looking back At failures that are past, But let me on the homeward track This confidence hold fast— The wasted years Thou wilt restore In Th y long Day of Evermore. — S elected . There is in the Bible no promise of grace in advance of the need. God did not -di vide Jordan’s waters while the people were yet in their camps, nor even as they began to march toward the river. The wild stream continued to flow as- the host moved down the banks, even until the feet of the priests had been dipped in the water. This is the constant law of divine help. It is not given in advance. As we come up to the need, the supply is ready, but not before. . . . Shall we not let God provide and have faith in H im?— J . R. M iller . JANUARY 2 Present Sufficiency "My grace is sufficient for thee” (2 Cor. 12:9). A Challenge to American Youth THE LIFE STORY OF RICHARD WEBER OLIVER By His Mother This young man, endowed with rare gifts of music and per sonal charm, forsook his cherished concert career for “ OTHERS." As Staff Radio Artist and Music Director he stirred thousands. He became an excellent instructor in the Bible and Personal Evangelism, and a successful winner of S°Ul3‘ WHAT OTHERS SAY “ I am enthusiastic about the life story of your precious boy, and shall be glad to recommend the book."—Paul W. Rood. “ The book is wonderful. God will use its great appeal to young m en.^-M el Trotter. “ Changed my self life to a fully yielded walk with Christ." Prof. R. A. M .,_____-iT? College. “ A challenge to young people everywhere and a great in spiration to all that read it."—S. S. Times.
