of God, shed abroad there by the Divine Spirit, they stood for the truth against priests and princes combined, and daring to be called heretics, they were faithful to their Lord in life and in death. 4 i,.—S ir R obert A nderson . JANUARY 10 The Fountain o f Living Waters "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38, R. V .). Let your life be hid with Christ in God. So will your life become a channel for the flowing of that fertilizing, healing stream that is ever giving out, and yet ever in creasing, the river of God’s love in Jesus Christ, the stream that to all eternity shall;' make glad the city of our God. . . . May we then open our hearts to thill gracious life-giving and life-enriching stream. It is only .when you and I can say, “ It is no longer I who live but Christ who- liveth in me,” that our life will become fruitful and beautiful as a well-watered garden. —D onald D avidson . JANUARY 11 Changed by Christ "For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost” (Matt. 18:11). When the Jews uttered maledictions con cerning that bit of Jericho’s riffraff, Z*c- cheus, Jesus startled as He corrected them by saying, “ He also is a son o f Abraham.”! John Ruskin tells us that the mud of our thoroughfares consists of gems in a disor ganized condition. No man has arisen to . change, by a wondrous alchemy, street slush into emeralds, and rubies— but Jesus has raked the moral gutters for His saints, has discovered diamonds in the veriest rubbish- heaps, and changed dwellers in the purlieus of shame into pearls most precious. If our evangelism is to similarly tell a thrilling tale, we must look with Christ’s eyes. —J oseph P earce . JANUARY 12 Our Almighty Advocate "And if any man sin, we have an advo cate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous” (1 John 2:1). Great Advocate, Almighty Friend, On Him our humble hopes depend; Our cause can never, never fail, For Jesus pleads, and must prevail. — S elected . All this is through the power of the cross. Oh, that we had eyes to see how completely the veil has been rent; how free and un hindered is our access to G od; and how freely His blessing may flow toward us!'. There is now nothing, absolutely nothing, to hinder the fullness of the love and power of God from coming to us and working in us, save only our unbelief, our slowness of heart. ^—A ndrew M urray . JANUARY 13 Latent Power “According to the power that worketh in us” (Eph. 3:20). For ages the world lived on the edge of the profoundest secrets of science and na ture, and because it knew them not, it never entered into their power; but when it knew the secret that was locked up in the light

ning and the steam, then all the forces of our modern commercial and industrial life at once came upon the scene of human life. . . . When we know that we have within us the power that can lift us above every temptation, difficulty, and sorrow, we be come partners in the power of God, and we go forth with the shout of a conqueror. —A. B. S impson . JANUARY 14 Love Born o f Christ "Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit" (Col. 1:8). “Love in the Spirit,” what is that? It is the only thing worth having in human af fection. . '. . Spiritual love is impervious to shadow. It comes not because the leaves are green, and therefore it goes not when the leaves are seared and yellow. . . . It will find the Son of man in the dark and cold of the sepulcher and anoint Him there with the myrrh and aloes. It will find the Apostle of the 'Gentiles in the meanness and degradation of a Roman dungeon and will recognize in him a perfect beauty, though his bodily presence were weak and his speech contemptible. . . . “Love in the Spirit,”— be this, O Lord, my love for Thee. Let me love Thee for what Thou art, not for what Thou givest. —^G eorge M atheson . JANUARY 15 Thirsting for Christ "M y soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is” (Psa. 63:1). O Spirit, Stream that by the Son Is opened to us crystal pure, Forth flowing from the heavenly throne, T o waiting hearts and spirits poor; Athirst and weary do I sink Beside Thy waters, there to drink. M y spirit turns to Thee and clings, All else forsaking, unto Thee; Forgetting all created things, Remembering only “ God in me.” O living Stream, O gracious Rain, None waits for Thee, arid waits in vain. — G. T er S teegen . JANUARY 16 Looking Toward Eternity Every one of us should consider how life will look from its close. It is a great thing to be able to say, as Dr. Robertson, of Ir vine, did: “Looking back on my ministry, I cannot charge myself with ever having ut tered from the pulpit a word I did not be lieve, and I never spoke what was frivol ous. My great aim has been to lead all to cry, 10 Lamb of God 1 Have mercy upon us!” ’ T o get the standpoint of the eternal, as the viewpoint for measuring and weigh ing lives, and estimating values, is a great success. T o this, as a standard, nothing is equal.— A rth u r T . P ierson . JANUARY 17 Seeking His Face "When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek” (Psa. 27:8). “ While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen" (2 Cor. 4:18).
