The choicest communications ever made to human minds are those which have come from the Great Father. Say, poor soul, what get you in Christ whenever you go to Him ? Can you not say, “ O h ! I get more love to Him than I had before; I never drew near to Him but I gained a large draught and ample fill of the love of God” ? Out of His fullness we receive grace for grace, and love for love. In a word, by faith we behold the glory of the Lord as in a glass, and are changed into the same image— and the image o f God is love.— C harles H addon S purgeon . JANUARY 18 Our Sin— His Death “ Who his own self hare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed“ (1 Pet. 2 :2+). Could you weigh the least sin in the scales of eternity, you would fly from it as from a serpent. Look upon all sin as that which crucified the Saviour, and you will see it to be “ exceeding sinful.” —Spiritual Life. Lord Jesus, be Thou the Master of the will and of the whole life of each one of us, so that we may be strong in Thy strength and clean in Thy purity. Defend us from the sin of yielding to the first whisper of sin. Let our abhorrence of evil be instant and uncompromising. Make us“ brave always to do the right. Enable us to go on our way when it is Thy way with out fear of consequences.— S elected . JANUARY 19 His W ill, My W ill "Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy Spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness” (Psa. 143:10). God is the master of the scenes. We must not choose which part we shall act.; it concerns us only to be careful that we do it well, always saying, “ If this please God, let it be as it is” ; and we who pray that God’s will may be done on earth as in heaven, must remember that the angels do whatsoever is commanded them, and go wherever they' are sent, and refuse no cir cumstances.— J erem y T aylor . W e have only one errand here,, to do God’s will— to fulfill the divine purpose of our life, and to glorify Christ. —J. R. M iller . JANUARY 20 Rejoicing in Tribulation “ Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations” (1 Pet. 1:6). God’s children are like stars, that shine brightest in the darkest night; like grapes, that come not to the proof till they come to the press; like trees, that drive down their roots farther and grasp the earth tighter by reason of the storm; like vines, that grow the better for bleeding; like juniper, that smells sweetest in the fire; . . . like the palm tree, which proves the better for pre serving; like the camomile, which spreads the more as you tread upon it. —Gospel Banner. The mind that is stayed on God can watch events as a man watches a sunset. — S elected .

JANUARY 21 Compassionate Love

came back to his work again with a broken heart, as one who had obtained a new vision. And it is the broken heart that breaks hearts.—F. B. M eyer .

“ The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise'’ (Psa. 51:17). Mr. Moody once1 said, in my hearing, that on one occasion he was conscious of a cold heart, and had been going through the routine of duty without love or ardor of soul. He felt this must not be allowed to continue and withdrew himself to study all the evidences of love which he could dis cover in the Gospels of our Saviour’s his tory. ■ At the end of three or four hours he
