was that he proved too little for his task. Jesus drew men into the near intimacies of God when He said, “ He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.” “ Like as a father pitieth . . but His compassion moved Him to a mother’s care: “ How often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings” ! A ll the prerogatives of parenthood Jesus undertook. He made men the chil dren of the everlasting Father. T he P rince of P eace Still further the embarrassed prophet added name to name. It is difficult to say why he should ever stop, but another as pect of necessary ministry came to his mind, and he found for the coming One the title of “ The Prince of Peace.” Peace is a great Christmas word. It was given to Him at the beginning. Many pictures of peace have been drawn, and many songs have been sung in its praise. The coming Christmas cards will bring suggestions of tranquillity, picturing hills and quiet lakes, winding streams, and peaceful cattle feeding in the pasture, quiet woods and snowy silences, but the real Christmas is not what artists paint. But “ the Prince of Peace” can change the war ring passions of the world, and He stands waiting, at Geneva and at Calvary, and at the heart of every man. These Old Testament names reveal what men expected and desired, what they were looking for, as they groped about for the perfect word and the perfect One. It would be difficult for us to supply a name, for we would encounter the risk of giving a wrong name, an unsuitable one, or an outgrown phrase wholly inappropriate, one that would apply today but not tomorrow, to one age but not to every age, to one people but not to all people. Jesus asked His disciples: “W ho do men say that I am?” They gave Him many predicates: “ John the Baptist,” “ Elijah,” “ Jeremiah,” “ one of the prophets.” “ But who say ye that I am?” Jesus further inquired. In answer they gave Him still another name, “ The Christ, the Son of the living God.” J esu s It is significant that, where men failed to find the perfect word for the Christmas Child, heaven helped us in selecting a title. God found the perfect name. He chose the defining word: “ Thou shalt call his name J esus : for he shall save his peo ple from their sins.” A ll other names are gathered up in this one name. It is too great, too extensive to spoil. Men in derision cut its letters upon a cross. God in love inscribed it on a throne. Men will bow before the name they once despised. “ He did not come to judge the world; He did not come to blame; He did not even come to teach; It was to save He came. And when we call Him Saviour, W e call Him by His name.” DESERT TEA R“™™» Ephedra). Makes u r . j r . l l i i u n excellent feed tea. Healthful and economical—10 cups for 1 cent. asked for equal trust, and with the trust He urged men to repose in G od: “ Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” . “Emmanuel” is His name: He is “ God with us.” Men could not climb the heights to where God was, but God plumbed the depths of man’s lowly condition. He did not call to men to come up. He came Himself to lift the race to a new plane. “ Oh, long and dark the stairs I trod With stumbling steps to find my God, Gaining a foothold bit by bit, Then slipping back and losing it . . . Down to the lowest steps my fall As if I had not climbed at all, And while I lay despairing there, I heard a footfall on the stair . . . And lo, when hope had ceased to be, My God came down the stair to me.” T h e E verlasting F ather “ The everlasting Father” is the prophet’s next suggestion, in which he seeks some thing nearer the heart of man, something akin to relationships that mean security and provision in childhood. Such a word con veys the thought that in a world like this we are but children, with all of the need and dependence that characterize children —unprovided for until some one makes their wants his care, their weakness his pro tection, their helplessness his charge. So the prophet gives the coming One the name of “ everlasting Father,” carrying the mean ing of nearness, solicitation, sympathy, strength, shelter. In olden days the Russian peasants called the Czar their “ Little Father.” The tragedy
