What is Causing the Pain? elbow and wrist injuries are especially common as a result of workplace injury and overuse. While it is sometimes possible to take action to prevent an injury from developing, it is especially important to be able to recognize when an injury develops and to understand ways that you can combat that injury by identifying what may have caused the pain to develop in the first place.
Common issues that can lead to shoulder, wrist, and elbow pain: • Issues with poor posture • Carpal tunnel syndrome, which can develop from overuse of the wrist and regular, repetitive motions, such as typing • Heavy lifting • Athletic injuries
Think about the tasks that make up the majority of your day- to-day life. It is often said that life in the 21st century is way easier on the body than life during any other time in human history — and it’s true that there is a fair amount of evidence to support this idea. Rather than spending all of your days working in a factory or on a farm, the vast majority of Canadians work indoors, often at a computer for a predetermined number of hours week after week. But this new lifestyle isn’t exactly harmless for the body, either. There are plenty of ways in which the common tasks of 21st- century life put the body under a great deal of stress. Shoulder,

One of the biggest concerns regarding pain in the shoulder, elbow, and wrist is that it is difficult to impossible to actually allow these parts of the body time to rest. Every movement and action requires these body parts — and when the pain develops in both arms, as it often does, treating the pain becomes even

Sleeper Stretch Start by lying on your side with the affected arm on the bottom. Your affected arm should be bent at the elbow and forearm pointed up- wards towards the ceiling as shown. Next, use your unaffected arm to gently draw your affected forearm towards the table or bed. Good to use if you have neck and shoulder pain.

more complicated. It is impossible to care for your basic needs without involving your shoulder or wrist, let alone get through a day at the office. This is why so many issues regarding pain in the shoulder, elbows and wrists typically become chronic. Since it is difficult to allow these body parts time to properly rest, they continue being overused and the pain can actually worsen. Treating Shoulder, Elbow and Wrist Pain Addressing the pain early on is the best way to prevent an issue from becoming chronic. Turning to medication and braces for pain management is not a long-term solution and will only push off the inevitable truth — that you need to find a solution for the problem that is causing you pain. Working with a trained clinician will provide you with an opportunity to understand what movements may be causing further discomfort, and can help you to strengthen the surrounding muscles while improving range of motion, which together will likely alleviate some of the pain associated with your injury. If you aren’t at ease with the prospect of in-person appointments, that’s ok! We can still help you with our tele-rehab appointments for physiotherapy, chiropractic, kinesiology and acupuncture. Don’t assume that pain in your shoulder, elbows or wrists will go away on its own. It is more common for the pain to worsen, and compensating for the pain by overusing the opposite arm can cause further injury to develop. HEALTHY VEGAN RECIPE JACKFRU I T PUL L ED PORK SANDWI CH
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 Tbsp canola oil, or high heat oil of choice • 1 small onion, sliced into strips • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 2 (20 ounce or 567 gram) cans young green jackfruit in brine, drained and rinsed • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
• 1/2 tsp liquid smoke • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
• Pinch cayenne pepper to taste • 1 1/2 cups vegan barbecue sauce • Salt and pepper to taste
• 6 sandwich rolls • Vegan coleslaw
DIRECTIONS: Coat a skillet with oil and place over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook for 5 min, stirring occasionally, until soft and starting to brown. Add garlic and cook for 1 min. Add jackfruit, soy sauce, and liquid smoke. Cook for 5 min, until the liquid cooks off. Sprinkle with smoked paprika and cayenne pepper. Stir and cook for 1 min. Stir in the BBQ sauce. Bring to a simmer, lower the heat, and cook for 20 min, stirring occasionally. Add water if sauce is too thick. Use two forks to pull the jackfruit apart until stringy. After owning and practicing at Town and Country Physiotherapy for 20 years, we are fortunate to have Alex join our team. Alex was born and raised on Vancouver Island. He graduated from the University of Victoria with a BSc in Biology, and from McMaster University with a BHSc in Physiotherapy. As a physiotherapist, he has participated in an Arthritis Society research project on
community education and awareness. He was a sessional instructor at the West Coast College of Massage Therapy. He has provided physiotherapy services for the Times Colonist 10km Run, National Swim Competitions, and the Victoria Open Golf tournament. History of the Chiropractic Profession While there is evidence to suggest that some chiropracticmaneuvers have been around since the time of the ancient Greeks, chiropractic care as it is practiced today was founded in 1895 by D.D. Palmer, said to be the discoverer of chiropractic methods and the founder of the chiropractic profession. Like most medical professions, the chiropractic profession has grown from its initial roots to provide scientific, evidence-based care to patients. In North America, chiropractors have become the third largest group of health care professionals (after physicians and dentists) who have primary contact with patients. Debunking Top Chiropractic Myths “Chiropractors only treat back injuries.” Yes, chiropractors “got your back,” but they also treat all types of pain including neck, shoulder, hip and back pain as well as for things like headaches, TMJ, foot/knee problems, pinched nerves and for all-around healthy aging. “Chiropractors aren’t real doctors.” Chiropractic is a comprehensive doctoral degree. All chiropractors have a minimum of 3 years of graduate school, and 4 years of chiropractic school. Chiropractors are highly trained, licensed medical professionals. To become a registered chiropractor in Canada, an individual must complete theDoctor of Chiropractic degree program, which is a four-year graduate degree program that follows an undergraduate degree.
