Peter Tate from Sunderland Council carrying out health checks

Hays Health Checks Hays Health Checks were organised for August and aimed to help people become more aware of their body composition, as well as giving staff the time and opportunity to have a health check during working hours. Peter Tate from Sunderland Council came into head office on 12 August and staff members who had booked in got a 15 minute slot to check things such as their blood pressure, heart rate, height, and

body composition; including visceral fat, muscle mass, bone mineral mass, and metabolic age. Emily said: “Peter is not a medical professional so was unable to give specific medical advice, however, he was able to signpost and give support for things such as diet, smoking, mental health, and other health issues. Staff were allowed to take this check during working hours and more than 40 people were

seen in the first session. As staff went back and were talking about the health checks to their team, more interest was sparked throughout the day, and due to the demand we organised another session for September. We are also organising for Peter to come back and do a 12 week check-up for people who have already seen him, giving staff the opportunity to continuously assess their own health whilst at work.”

MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING IN THE WORKPLACE CONFERENCE

Happen charity. His story particularly stood out as his life was changed forever when he helped persuade someone down from Waterloo Bridge who was contemplating taking their own life. His story was inspirational and received high media coverage. He was part of a high profile social media search #FindMike which led to him meeting back up with Jonny, the man whose life he saved, over six years later. I would definitely recommend researching his journey as it is truly inspiring. “Other topics covered included mental health in travel, overcoming stigma and discrimination in the workplace, and understanding the effect of modern working practices on workplace stress. There were lots of different companies who presented including Mind, The Mental Health Foundation, Royal Caribbean International, and ABTA Lifeline. I learnt so much from the speakers on the day and hope to be able to implement further ideas and initiatives at Hays over the next year to help support employees further.”

Our graduate in the training department, and member of the Health Advocate Team, Emily Wilson, was asked to speak at ABTA’s first ever Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Workplace conference in London this November. Here’s Emily’s report. “It was a real privilege to not only be invited to the event but also to be given the opportunity to present on what Hays Travel have been doing over the past couple of years to help with staff health and wellbeing. “There were a number of presenters on the day including keynote speaker, Neil Laybourn, the founder of This Can
