The Christian is compared in the Scriptures to light, salt, the branch of a vine, and a tree bearing fruit. These all have their vocations, each one according to his kind. A light (not a lamp) is always shining. Salt is always salty. The branch is always the same as the vine and bears grapes if it is a grape vine. The tree is always bearing fruit in its season. The Christian does not take up as a vocation the business of telling about the Saviour to the saved and the lost. He is in that business from the day he trusts Christ. Wherever he goes, he sheds forth the light of that wonderful Lord who fills his heart and mind. The Evangelist Is Needed 2 Tim. 4:5 It is rather surprising to note in Ephesians 4:12 that the purpose of the evangelist is to edify the church. This is not our thought of an evan gelist’s work but it is God’s Word. He is to preach the gospel to the lost. He is to win them for Christ and then bring them into the fellowship of God’s people thereby building up the church. Thus he brings in talents, gifts, and funds for the blessing of the church. The evangelist has a great ministry. He should study the twelve great aspects of the gospel and should know how to use this bait in every possible way to catch men. The Shepherd Is Needed 1 Pet. 5:2 There are those who are especially gifted by the Lord to look after and tend God’s sheep and lambs. They need special wisdom for handling the problems which arise particularly in the lives of young believers. They

need to have a tender heart of com passion and seek to restore the wan dering sheep. They need loving arms with which to carry the little lambs, remove their fears and bring them to good pasture. They need to be dili gent in watching the state of the flock lest any be led astray through false teaching. They must be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves in protecting and providing for them. The Teacher Is Needed Heb. 5:12 The first command from the risen Lord was to go and teach all nations. Sinners need to be taught the way of salvation. Christians need to be taught the will of God. The Bible is full of parables, miracles and illustrations to be made clear and plain to the people. The teacher must speak plainly for no ambiguous teaching will produce results for God. He must know the Word himself and then be able to pass it on to others wisely and help fully. The teacher needs the unction of the Spirit upon him in order to convey God’s thoughts to those who hear his message. The Servant Is Needed Acts 6:3 Among God’s precious people there are many who cannot preach or teach acceptably. They do not have the gift of public utterance. They can, how ever, do many other things. In the Scripture just quoted you will note that the waiters at the table were to be those who were full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. This is not always the custom today. Those who are least esteemed in the church are given the menial work. It does take a Spirit- T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S
