whitewash to cover unspeakable cor­ ruption. It is not uncommon to find people in our fellowships who are constantly breaking the Ten Com­ mandments. Others do not go that far but, nevertheless, in the words of an old woman that I once used to know, “ They do bend them rather badly.” In the case of some of our prominent leaders in the church, their home lives will not bear looking into. Some of our devout Christians will testify of peace of heart while still under the control of a violent temper. There are still thousands of un­ solved problems caused by people who have readily accepted salvation from the penalty of sin but have never won victory over the power of sin. It is this sin which can be as easily present in members of the family of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles as anywhere else. We need to cry with a depth of earnestness in •our hearts that we have never known before, “ Search me, O God, and know my heart today.” The second thing is that even when they are clean, our hearts may be empty of that passion for Christ which alone can be the motive for sacrifice and service. The only way this can be altered is by the arising of a deep hunger within our hearts for the presence of God in a way in which we have never known before. We need something that will drive us to prayer not only in the appointed times and in the services of worship, but everywhere else as well. In the midst of our daily tasks, while we walk the streets or ride the buses or work in the home or study at school or carry out our business at the oflice or shop or factory, or even when we lie awake at night to take our hearts and minds away from all these sec­ ondary things right to the very throne of God until there is not a moment of the day or night when our beings are not powerfully aware of His pres­ ence. Marvelous things happen when peo­ ple live habitually in the area of His presence. We should look upon our Scriptures as a means to this end. It isn’t only that the Bible was in­ spired when it was written; it is inspired now. Every page is radio­ active with the unseen powers of God. We cannot read its pages with­ out these powers mysteriously influ­ encing our lives. We do not read the (Continued on Page 39) T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S
