King's Business - 1951-04

May 13, 1951 NATIONAL CORRUPTION AND DECAY 1 Kings 12:20; 16:23-28,30; Amos 6:1-6 Pointers on the Lesson This week’s lesson focuses attention on the Northern Kingdom; next week’s lesson will be confined to a study of the Southern Kingdom. Both of these lessons illustrate the truth of this week’s Memory Selection, namely, “ Righteousness exalteth a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people” (Prov 14:34). In the course of the history of the Northern Kingdom, we find not a single king who did that which was right in the sight of the Lord. Fur thermore, the record shows us that the nation gave itself to idolatry and all manner of wickedness. With what result? Continual declension and final captivity to Assyria in 722 B.C. The Southern Kingdom was not much bet ter, but it did have eight kings of whom it is said that they “ did that which was right in the sight of the Lord.” Consequently, this righteous leadership on the part of the minority of its kings enabled the Southern Kingdom of Judah to maintain its national life until 586 B.C. when it went into bondage to Babylon. Israel’s First King 1 Ki. 12:20 Why was the Kingdom divided? Be cause the covenant which the Lord had made with Solomon and his sub jects had been broken. See 11:11, 12, 26. There is no covenant that sin won’t mar. Think of the covenants you have made with God. Have you permitted sin to mar them? Jeroboam became the first king over the ten tribes who refused to follow after Rehoboam. The sort of a man he was may be seen by referring to verses 28-33 of this chapter. Being a wicked king, he gave Israel a bad start from which they never recovered. Israel’s New Capital 1 Kings 16:23-28 Under Omri, the sixth king of Is rael, a beautiful site was purchased for the establishment of a permanent capital. Thus under this man’s reign the capital was moved from Tirzah to Samaria where it remained until the captivity. The site was well-chosen, being located upon a hill overlooking a fertile country and easy to be forti fied. Isaiah speaks of its glorious beauty in the twenty-eighth chapter of his prophecy in which he tells of forthcoming judgment due to persist ent sin and pride. Evidently Omri thought more of building a beautiful capital and of making a name for T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

David’s Solemn Charge 1 Chron. 22:17-19

It having been previously revealed to David that he himself was not to build the temple, he encouraged Sol omon his son to fulfill the task (6-16) and the princes of Israel are urged to give him diligent aid in this great task.

Helps for the Children David the Great King 2 Sam. 5-8; 1 Chron. 22:17-19

Memory Verse: “ Thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord” (Deut. 6:18). For many years David, the shep herd, had brought victory to God’s people although he had not been their king. At last, when David was thirty years of age, he was crowned king over his people. Each year David became greater because God was with him. David built a beautiful house for himself. Before each war with his enemies, David inquired of God whether or not it was His will that the Israelites should go to the battle. David and his people. brought the sacred ark up to the city of Jerusalem with singing and dancing and much rejoicing. When David had conquered all of his enemies, he had a great de sire to build God a house as beautiful as the one which he had built for himself. Nathan, the prophet, received a message from God for David that David should not build Him a house. David was a man of war; God’s house was to be built by his son, Solomon, a man of peace. God made a covenant or promise with David that his house and his kingdom should be established forever. When Nathan delivered the message to David, the king felt un worthy of such great honor from God. He went before God to pray and wor ship. Many times God gave David victory over his enemies. Each time, rather than taking the gold and silver from his victories for himself, David dedicated them to God. “ And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.” David was called “ a man after God’s own heart.” David’s life was sinful at times; God did not love his sin, but God loved David’s willingness to ask for cleansing and forgiveness. David’s people loved him because of his love for them and his love for God. David was blessed because he obeyed the command of the great lead er, Moses, who said, “ Thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord.”
