INDIANA m SA’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AT 3.5% IN JANUARY
HARRISBURG (MARCH 14) – The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Indiana Micropolitan
Statistical Area (mSA) was 3.5 percent in January. The statewide and national rates were unchanged at 3.4
percent and 3.7 percent, respectively.
For a list of county and MSA rankings by unemployment rate, please see the Civilian Labor Force packet.
Total nonfarm jobs (not seasonally adjusted) in the Indiana mSA were down 1,700 to 28,300 in January.
Jobs were down in five of the nine published supersectors over the month. The largest decreases were all seasonal
in nature. Government was down by 1000 jobs due to winter break. Leisure and hospitality declined by 300 jobs
and trade, transportation, and utilities contracted by 200. Over the year, four of the nine published supersectors
increased, led by a 600 job gain in education and health services.
NOTE: Because the data included in each month’s press release (primarily civilian labor force and nonfarm jobs data) are sample based, the data are subject to revisions. Once each year, estimates are adjusted to new levels based on additional or revised information collected after the initial release of the data (called a benchmark). Additionally, seasonal adjustment factors for historical labor force and nonfarm jobs data are updated. Revisions to the nonfarm jobs series through 2023 have been completed and are reflected in the January news release. Revisions to the historical labor force series have not been completed and are not yet reflected in the January news release. Historical labor force revisions are expected to be completed by the release of March data in late April 2024. For more information on the benchmarking process and revisions to historical data please contact the Center for Workforce Information & Analysis at 1-877-4WF-DATA, or visit www.paworkstats.pa.gov.

FOOTNOTES
3) Unemployed as percent of civilian labor force, computed using unrounded data. 4) Seasonally adjusted M SA level data (and their equivalent) is developed by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS); seasonal adjustment for all other sub-state areas are developed by CWIA. 1) Estimate of workers by place of residence. These data are controlled to state Current Population Survey (CPS) data which adjusts for commuting and dual job-holding. Workers are counted where they live only once regardless of the number of jobs they may hold. All in-depth inquiries relative to the estimating methodology should be addressed to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor. All data are subject to revision during annual benchmarking. 2) Includes wage and salary workers (including agriculture), self-employed persons, and unpaid family workers (including agriculture), domestic workers, and persons involved in labor-management disputes.
