The Pressure to Get It Right
Robert did not arrive at that philosophy without carrying pressure of his own.
As a young craftsman, he wanted flawless execution before experience had taught him how to achieve it. He remembers buying his first tools and confronting the distance between the standard he could already see and the skill his hands had not yet learned to deliver. When the work did not feel right, he did it again—sometimes repeatedly. Even when others told him it looked good, Robert struggled to leave something alone if he believed it could be better.
