personal evangelism by Ben)amin Weiss D o y o u k n o w the answers to their questions? When you talk to a person about the exciting and won derful experiences of the Christian life, you often get a question in reply. Your own witness has raised the ques tion. The question may have been in the person’s mind a long time. A mental or spiritual block may be the impedi ment to a decision for Jesus Christ. Apparently, to that moment no satis fying answer has been suggested. Your word may raise a vague hope that you have the answer. Perhaps you read Romans 3:23 to this person. In response, he asked, “What is sin?” You had ready a stock answer, clear and satisfying to you, so it should be to him. But remember he is not you. His experiences, train ing and knowledge of the Bible are quite different from yours. You ex plain, “ Sin is breaking God’s law.” This is correct and Scriptural but is it simple and clear enough for him? He may know little or nothing about God’s laws. If he is a twelve-year-old boy, what would be your answer to this ques tion? Would it be the same as to a teen-ager or to an adult? If he is an intellectual, would that make a dif ference? You could ask him a question and have him give his own answer. The word sin has some meaning to him. What does it mean? He may give you a very satisfactory answer. This would give you a clue to his problem and show you how to be helpful to him. A young lady replied, “I don’t re member ever having sinned.” The counselor asked her, “Did you ever disobey your parents?” “Why yes,” she replied, “But everyone does that at some time.” “ But God’s command ments say, ‘Honor thy father and thy mother.’ Is disobeying them honoring them, and have you not thus broken God’s law and so sinned?” This brought an admission of sin on this woman’s part and a decision for Christ. Be ready with an answer. We can rely on the Holy Spirit to supply the answer fitted to the inquirer’s ques tions. “ Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh for a reason for the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (I Peter 3:15).
