Read through the HMRC agreement and click ‘Confirm and Continue’. You will be asked to enter your Government Gateway User ID and Password. Click ‘Connect to HMRC’. This may take a few minutes while HMRC process your return.
Once you have connected with HMRC, you will see one of two messages: • If your submission is in a queue with HMRC click ‘OK, got it’. • If your submission has failed, click ‘Close’ and try again.
Wait a few minutes while your return is processed and refresh your screen. Once refreshed, if successful, click ‘View Confirmation’ to see details of the confirmation and the IR Mark. If your submission has failed, click Resubmit to HMRC to try again. Sometimes failed submissions can be due to an incorrect Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). If you see a banner appear at the top of your return, click through to your financial settings and check that the UTR is entered correctly. Once you've updated your UTR, try filing your return again.
If you would like to save a copy of the figures you have submitted to HMRC, run the CIS monthly return and then save as a PDF or export as a spreadsheet.
If you make changes that impact a CIS Return you've already successfully submitted, resubmit the updated return to HMRC to overwrite the previous return. HMRC won't penalise you for any resubmitted returns.
• Open the return you want to resubmit. • Click Resubmit to HMRC, then click Confirm and continue. • Enter your HMRC Gateway credentials, then click Connect to HMRC.
