The Colorful World of Yves Saint Laurent

Fashions fade, style is eternal. --Yves Saint Laurent

I ndisputably one of the greatest couturiers of the twentieth century, Yves Saint Laurent was celebrated for changing the color of couture. Inspired by a variety of exotic destinations such as Africa, Russia, Spain and Asia, he used the bright colors, shapes and fabrics of these faraway places to create collections that expressed his own vision of the style and fashion influences pulsating within their borders. Perhaps no other place inspired him more than Marrakech, where he and his partner Pierre Berge purchased and lovingly restored a house in the Jardin Majorelle. Known for its bright cobalt blue walls and canary yellow trimmings, the house and city became the designer’s muse and creative oasis where he brought his design and sketch work to life prior to launching a new collection.

This color board (left) featuring some of his most famous fashion sketches mixed with some of our most rich and vibrant colored leathers pays tribute to the legendary French designer and his iconic sense and use of color. – –
