Apprenticeship Guide To BGB About Us
Company Profile & History
Company Profile Established in 1976 as a manufacturer of carbon brush holders, BGB began exporting in the early 1990s - now over 90% of turnover is achieved through the exportation of rotary goods and services such as slip ring assemblies, fibre optic rotary joints and other rotary transmission devices. Specialising in the design from concept, manufacturing and marketing of our own range of niche market engineering solutions, we pride ourselves on developing quality assemblies in partnership with our customers for win-win outcomes. With two sites in Grantham (UK) and a second plant in Virginia (USA), BGB has built a great reputation for its products worldwide. History By the turn of the 1990’s, BGB’s reputation for individual slip rings and brush holders was clear to see, particularly in industries such as Packaging, Standby Power,
Cable Reeling and Water Treatment. It’s within the Wastewater industry where we designed and manufactured the first slip ring packaged assembly, combining both slip ring and brush holders into one neatly packaged sealed unit. The early 1990’s saw our first venture into an emerging energy market coming out of Denmark where wind turbines were becoming a popular way of producing energy from a renewable source. With the help of a Danish agent, we began to form great relationships
with early OEM’s: NEG Micon, Vestas, Bonus and Siemens, providing NEG Micon and Vestas with our first wind specific pitch control slip ring.

Slip Rings & Slip Ring Assembly
Slip Rings Slip ring and brush holder solutions are in our DNA at BGB, our slip ring solutions can be found all over the globe and in various industry sectors where rotary transmission is required. Slip rings can be used in any electromechanical system that requires unrestrained, intermittent or continuous rotation while transmitting power and/or data. Slip rings can improve mechanical performance, simplify system operation and eliminate damage-prone wires dangling from movable joints.
Variations: Barrel | Modular | Pancake | Fabricated | Capsule
Slip Ring Assemblies Our slip ring assemblies are designed to provide the user with mounting interfaces, termination points and sufficient sealing, so as to enable the installation and continuous rotational transmission of the system. Operating predominantly within the wind and wastewater sectors, we have developed our products and processes to provide high-quality assemblies that meet a range of standards and approvals.
Variations: Barrel | Modular | Pancake | Pitch/Hub Control

Fibre Optics & Contact Technologies
Fibre Optics Constructed in stainless steel, our FORJ (Fibre Optic Rotary Joint) systems have exceptional durability protecting the units from dust and water ingress to IP68. This means they are not influenced by vibration, humidity, heat, magnetism or other typical disturbances. FORJs are the optical equivalent of an electrical slip ring. As passive devices, they allow for the low loss transfer of single or multi-mode signals, through rotating interfaces, using optical technology. Variations: Single Channel Multimode - made by BGB Others available through partners: Singlemode | Multi-channel | Miniature | L-Type | Capacitives
Contact Technologies We design and manufacture a wide range of well- engineered, robust light-weight, corrosion resistant brush holders for use across a broad spectrum of industries including power generation, marine, clean water, transportation, industrial, renewable and leisure sectors. Our range of brush holders come with a general purpose grade of either copper graphite or silver graphite brushes, application specific grades are available as an option. Variations: Single Leg | Double Leg | Paratec | Lightning Box | Earthing

Rotary Unions & Spares / Repairs
Rotary Unions / Joints Rotary Joints, also known as rotary couplings, unions or swivels, are mechanical devices used to transfer Liquid (usually hydraulic oil), Gas, or Particles from a stationary system, to a rotary system. As specialists in rotary applications, we can design bespoke packages to include slip rings or FORJs to Rotary Unions as a one-stop solutions provider.
Variations: Hydraulic
Spares & Refurbishment We can repair, refurbish or replace all types of slip rings. The refurbished slip ring will be returned to a similar “as new” condition, even if the slip ring is physically damaged. With a newly extended repair, testing and service centre at our Turnpike Close site in the UK, we have a designated professional area to service any type of slip ring refurbishment. From single units to large batches, the aim is to offer an economical, efficient way to extend the life of slip ring assemblies, thereby reducing waste and with a subsequent reduction of demand on resources. Variations: Competitor SR’s | Generator SR’s | General SR’s

Apprenticeship Guide To BGB FAQs
All answers may differ on a case by case basis.
I have personal problems outside of work which has started to affect my job, what should I do?
BGB take mental health very seriously and have a group of trained mental health advisors. Keith Copeland is BGB’s main mental health First Aider and Trainer - his door is always open if you need to talk. All conversations will be kept private and confidential.
I feel as though I have been doing well in my role, how would I approach a pay review?
Dependant on the department you work within this may alter, but it would be best to discuss this in your 1-1 reviews. Show examples of good achievements and targets you’ve reached to support your point and where possible demonstrate how you have gone above and beyond the role asked of you.
I feel like I haven’t been given enough training to complete a task, what would I do?
Adequate training should always be provided but further training can always be requested in a 1-1 review. If in doubt always ask for help.
Part way through my apprenticeship I feel I would be better suited to a different department or job role what can I do?
Depending on restrictions from the educational provider, this should be discussed with your line manager. If you’ve shown a good work ethic, you may be able to get a secondment into a different department (this is certainly not guaranteed though).
