Stay engaged with BICSI throughout the year! BICSI Membership Advantage

MEMBERS ONLY

Hello BICSI Membership! With the 2024 Winter Conference & Exhibition now past, we can turn our attention to the coming spring … and to the 2024 Fall Conference in Las Vegas! Before we get too ahead of ourselves, let’s also remember to take time throughout the year to focus on our professional development by taking advantage of everything that BICSI has to offer, including training, manuals, and volunteer opportunities. For those of you who registered for the 2024 Winter Conference, your ICT Direct recordings will be available through 31 March. If you only registered for ICT Direct, don’t miss out on the 12 CECs you will earn by participating. If you are unable to attend the Winter or Fall conferences this year, you can still earn CECs toward your current or potential credentials by attending an in-person, virtual training, or BICSI Connect course. To see our many opportunities, visit our Calendar of Events page or the Learning Academy. Visit the Certification page for credential-specific information, and see the latest in Technical Manuals and Standards. This is also a great time to explore the various volunteer opportunities BICSI has to offer. From our standards program to technical manual editing to credentialing to mentoring, we are bound to have an area for you to share your expertise, build upon your leadership experience, and network with your peers. Learn more on our website here.

PAGE 19

COMMUNITY CORNER

Also, remember to take time to review your membership profile to ensure that your contact information is current and verify your renewal date. Keeping your membership active ensures that you are getting the best price for BICSI products and services. We do send email notices regarding renewal, but it’s a good practice to log in to your account to verify your renewal date and to set a calendar reminder.

I’ll wrap up with a quick reminder on the difference between membership and credentials. BICSI membership and certification are different programs. Membership is joined, and credentials are earned. One similarity is that notices for renewal and recertification are sent as you near those expiration dates. It can be easy to overlook one of the notices if you’ve recently paid for the other. Membership is renewed annually; recertification is every three years. Verify the dates for both and mark your calendar, and you will be good to go.

We look forward to hearing from you throughout the year and hopefully, we’ll see you in Las Vegas for BICSI’s 2024 Fall Conference.

COMMUNITY CORNER

LDC SPOTLIGHT The BICSI Leadership Development Committee (LDC) consists of a Chair, two Board members appointed by the Board President, and four elected BICSI

to self-nominate for a Board Officer position. The LDC will present to the Board a contested slate of all Board Officer candidates for only the Board members to vote. The candidate in each position with the greatest number of votes is elected. For the Board Director and LDC member elections, the LDC’s activities may include identifying possible candidates, contacting potential candidates, recruiting those candidates, interviewing candidates, informing candidates of the demands of Board or LDC service, and helping them complete the self-nomination process if needed. Every LDC member reviews and scores each self-nomination based on a rating scale approved by the LDC. Based on the results of the initial review, the LDC will select the top eight Board candidates and the top four LDC candidates who will advance to the interview stage. The LDC then interviews each candidate using a set of questions and scores the candidates. Once the interviews are completed, the LDC will select the top four Board candidates and top two LDC

candidates who best match the desired competencies and skills needed and then publish the uncontested slates to all members. BICSI members will have a 30-day petition period to consider the slates and submit a petition to add alternate candidates. If members do not submit any petitions, the slated candidates are considered accepted by the membership. If petitions are submitted to add an eligible alternate candidate, a new contested slate will be published, and members will have

members. Its main purpose is to facilitate the annual nominations process and present slates of candidates who are eligible for Board Officer, Board Director, and LDC elections each year. The LDC helps identify the leadership competencies and skills needed to achieve BICSI’s strategic goals and recommends strategies for identifying and developing BICSI’s future volunteer leaders. Each year, the LDC reviews BICSI’s strategic plan and facilitates the annual Board and LDC self-evaluations to identify the competencies and skills gaps created by the outgoing Board and LDC members. The LDC then reviews and approves "position descriptions" for the open positions defining the desired competencies and skills needed for the incoming Board and LDC members. The LDC then issues a call for self- nominations for the open positions. For the Board Officer elections, only current Board members, other than the Board President, Board President-Elect, and Immediate Past Board President, are eligible

30 days to cast votes. The four Board candidates and the two LDC candidates with the greatest number of votes are elected. The election cycle ends when BICSI publishes the official announcement of the newly elected Board Officers, Board Directors, and LDC Members after

all candidates have been notified of their individual results.

COMMUNITY CORNER

More than Words from Women in BICSI “Let’s get together and make a difference!” By: Heather Randolph, Technology Design Engineer at EXP

The new year stands as a beacon of hope and transformation. It is a time when people around the world pause to reflect on the past year, set intentions for the future, and embrace the possibility of change and growth.

National Mentoring Month is an annual campaign held in January to promote the importance of mentoring and encourage individuals to become mentors. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the positive impact of mentoring on young individuals and communities. During National Mentoring Month, BICSI comes together to recognize the power of mentoring relationships through the BICSI Mentorship Program. The Mentorship program highlights the benefits of mentoring, such as improved career performance, increased self-confidence, and

overcome these challenges. Mentoring can offer tools to help navigate a mentee through these difficult challenges. Through my career, I have encountered many mentors, some male, some female, but I wouldn’t be as far in my career if it wasn’t for those who gave back to the younger generation. Having a role model to look up to throughout my collegiate career and in my professional career allowed me to have networking opportunities, as well as personal and professional development, along with balancing work-life challenges.

enhanced social skills among mentees. It also emphasizes the importance of having experienced professionals – role models who can support and guide young people in reaching their full potential. Women in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry often face several struggles and challenges. Addressing these struggles requires collective efforts from industry leaders, organizations, policymakers, and society. Promoting diversity and inclusivity, providing mentorship, and supporting networks are some of the steps that can help

PAGE 22

COMMUNITY CORNER

I encourage everyone to have at least one role model or mentor in their life. It's important to note that while a female mentor can provide specific support and guidance relative to gender-related challenges, the qualities of a mentor, such as expertise, experience, and a genuine interest in the mentee's success, are also vital. Ultimately, the ideal mentor would possess both professional knowledge and the ability to relate personally and offer support. Highlighting successful women in technology and their achievements allows them to serve as role models and inspirations for aspiring women in the field. By showcasing diverse representation and success stories, more women can envision themselves pursuing careers in technology. National Mentoring Month serves as a reminder that anyone can make a difference in the life of a young person through mentoring. By getting involved, individuals can positively impact the lives of mentees, contribute to their personal and career growth, and help create a brighter future for the next generation. Volunteer to become a mentor or mentee and create a more equitable and inclusive ICT industry. Still need a New Year’s Resolution? Grow your network and volunteer to be a part of the BICSI MENTORSHIP PROGRAM. Apply to be a BICSI mentor or mentee, or contact Heather Randolph at MENTORSHIP@BICSI.ORG.
