PPC Spring Outlook Brings Fresh Ideas To Folding Carton Industry BY SUSAN RILEY Attracting and, equally important, retaining talented employees is one of the workplace issues that is top of mind for everyone in the folding carton industry or any industry for that matter. That’s why at this year’s Spring Conference on April 17-19 at the Omni Frisco Hotel in Dallas, Texas, the Paperboard Packaging Council has selected a lineup of speakers who will impart valuable knowledge about leadership development strategies that attendees can take home and put into practice.

CPR Saves Man’s Life At ND Paper Mill In Rumford, Maine Bill Ross wasn't feeling well the morning of February 7. As he left work at ND Paper’s mill in Rumford, Maine, he lost consciousness … and nearly his life. It was Ellie Hall, Rumford’s OM Site Lead, who found him as she was coming into the mill. Bill was lying on the sidewalk just inside the gate. Ellie acted immediately by alerting Security Guard Justin Moore and Traffic An- nex team member Heidi Child to call 911. She also realized that Bill was in cardiac arrest and jumped into action with CPR. About three minutes later, another co-worker, Rod- ney Farrar, came through the gate and re- lieved Ellie by continuing CPR. Soon, the Rumford EMS was on site and took over the response. EMS continued to work on Bill for over 40 minutes and they were able to revive him. He was transported to Rumford Hospital and then life-flighted to Central Maine Medi- cal Center in Lewiston. ND Paper is thrilled to report that Bill is tak- ing steps toward a full recovery, and seeing that a celebration was in order, they hosted a special luncheon to honor the responders CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

“We’ve gathered together an A-list agenda to help our executives elevate their communication and leadership development strategies to help guide them through the current workplace era and plan for the future so they can prosper amid cyclical turns in the economy and mar- kets,” said Ben Markens, PPC President. Creative Leadership Keynote speaker, Lisa Ryan, a best-selling author and Founder of Grategy, is one of the country’s most in-demand inspirational speakers and employee engagement experts. In her keynote presentation, she will go “Beyond the Box” to show how to take employee engagement initiatives to the next level to ensure that top talent and valued clients remain loyal. Kolbus America Unveils RDG Hybrid Flexo Rotary Die Cutter

that doesn’t compromise on advanced technology,” he said. “We understand the challenges our customers face in staying competitive, and this new machine addresses those needs perfectly.” Like the fully-servo “sister” machine — the RDS Graph- ics Series — the RDG is built with quality craftsmanship, at the Kolbus factory in Rahden, Germany. The cast-iron, 4” thick side frames add to its robustness and reduce vi- bration, ensuring a premium print quality. Additionally, the intuitive touchscreen HMI allows operators make adjust- ments on the fly, without opening the machine. “We’re excited to launch this machine to the North American market,” said Phil Eads, Sr. Sales Manager at Kolbus America. “The RDG Performance Series is one of only a few ma- chines on the market with the hybrid gear/servo drive tech- nology. That technology, the German construction, along with the slot score and top print capabilities, make this die cutter a remarkable choice for anyone looking to add a highly capable machine at a conservative price point.” The RDG Performance Series was launched in the Eu- ropean market in the Fall of 2023 where it has seen great interest. The first RD 115G was commissioned in November 2023 at a facility in Chemnitz Saxony, Germany. More information about the Kolbus RDG Performance Series can be found online at kolbusamerica.com/kol- bus-rds or by contacting the Kolbus America Sales team at sales@kolbus.com.

Huntersville, North Carolina based Kolbus America, a pro- vider of innovative solutions in the printing and packaging industry, announced the launch of its latest development, the Kolbus RDG 115/135 Performance Series Rotary Die Cutter. This German-engineered, hybrid rotary die cutter sets a new standard in boxmaking technology, combining eco- nomic efficiency with cutting-edge features to meet the evolving needs of customers. The Kolbus RDG Performance Series is a hybrid-de- signed, gear driven machine, integrated with servo tech- nology. This rotary die cutter offers a versatile and tech- nically advanced solution for converters seeking modern technology, without compromising on budget. The RDG can be equipped with a slot score unit and top print units, increasing its capabilities. Since the RDG is a modular machine concept, additional sections can be added if desired. With a strong focus on delivering efficien- cy and precision, the RDG Performance series is poised to redefine the landscape of corrugated converting. Kenneth Wagner, Wagner Industries’ Founder & CEO, Passes Away At 80

Ken Wagner, 80, founder & CEO of Wagner Industries, Inc., Frackville, Pennsylvania, passed away in January 2024 surrounded by his loved ones. Ken started the business in 1968 as a young man with ambition and enthusiasm. He left an indelible mark on the corrugated Box industry with his inventiveness and depth of character. He visited box plants on a regular basis and met with maintenance to discuss areas of machines He said, “There is always something broken in a box plant, and if there is any way we can manufac- ture something to make their lives easier, let’s do it!” The power of Wagner’s innovation dates back to the 1970s when Ken invented the coreless No Crush roller. This allows a bearing to be inserted directly into the wheel, eliminating the need for hub assembly. This product saves time, money and is the standard today for most no crush applications. that were problematic. Ken realized how many ap- plications he could improve by reducing down time and extending product life. In the 1980s, Ken devised a split roller called the “Quickroll.” The Quickroll allowed converters to easily recover their feedrolls without re- moving the shaft from the machine. This unique product consists of a replaceable feed element that made downtime for recovering an entire feed roll under one hour. This product eliminates the need to have crated spares to ship out & return. Fast forwarding to the 1990s Ken was restless to design a new part for the industry. He pioneered a split design for Lead Edge Feed tables. This innovation revolutionized the replacement of feed wheels & eliminated the need to pull shafts and grates. Ken’s innovation allows the wheels to be changed right on the machine even during production set ups. In addition to the split feed wheels, Ken was granted a design patent for the lock system he called Key Lok used for the stitch lap or glue tab anvils. One of Ken’s greatest inventions of the new millennium was the seg- mented corrugator hold down brush. Corrugator brushes originally made with carbon fiber fingers were a frequently replaced item. He saw the need for a more durable product and set out to make a brush with a flexible urethane spine and spring steel fingers. This product allowed the brush to flex and return to its original position millions of times without damage. The corrugated box industry has been the lifework of Ken Wagner and the company he founded so many years ago. He taught his family and employees to work hard, be humble and treat people with respect and dignity. As we bid farewell to Ken, let us honor his memory by embodying the qualities that he exemplified. Let us strive to be compassionate, dedicat- ed, and to find joy in our work and our relationships. His spirit will forever be a part of this team, and his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. To Ken, thank you for the laughter, the wisdom, and the countless memories. You were more than a colleague; you were a father, grandfa- ther, uncle, boss, treasured friend, and a guiding light in our lives. Your memory will forever be cherished in our hearts. Rest in peace, Ken. You have left an indelible mark on our lives, and you will be deeply missed. Ken Wagner

Make a stronger, lighter and more sustainable corrugated blank using less glue by implementing a “brick” style pattern developed by Baumer hhs. This pattern creates a stronger bond using less glue. Our new all-electric PX 1000 applicators with over a billion cycle life can easily apply the pattern with clean cutoff and accurate placement. The PGD 1000 sensor is there to show your customer that every box was properly glued so you’ll never end up on some gag reel. You can be the star with The CorrBox solution from Baumer hhs.

PGD 1000 Monitoring Sensor • Measure the glue proximity to the edge of the tab and avoid squeeze-out so you deliver an accurately glued box every time. • The printing on the carton does not effect the hybrid sensor’s ability to read the bead. Black, white, plaid or polka dot, the sensor is not bothered, so neither are you. • No UV additives needed for detection saves you money, time and effort.

PX 1000 Cold Glue Applicator • Extremely fast and powerful closing force means no drips or tailing so your first box is a good box. • Strong armature activation easily handles viscosity fluctuations and will work with a large variety of adhesives. • Fast action coil means you can now stitch your beads at higher running speeds lowering adhesive consumption up to 70% and improving board output.

Bloomington, Illinois based BOPI announced the installa- tion of the newest generation Koenig & Bauer Ipress 106 K PRO die cutter and Allpro 110 folder gluer. “Ever since we installed both the Koenig & Bauer Ipress 106 K PRO die cutter and Allpro 110 folder gluer, everyone has been quite pleased at the speed and automation of the equipment,” says Tom Mercier, BOPI’s Chairman. “We needed equipment that was high powered enough to handle our capacity issues and didn’t limit us to a small- er sheet size. Our existing Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 28 x 41-inch eight-color perfector press is consistently operat- ing at 18,000 sph and we had bottlenecks in our postpress. After we visited Koenig & Bauer’s European factories to see both pieces of equipment in operation, we could see that they were top-of-the-line machines running four times faster than our current equipment. “The Ipress 106 K PRO matches our Rapida press size and allows us to handle a larger sheet. We are also im- pressed with the inline stripping and automated blanking units that are the most technologically advanced. These features provide us with high-speed production perfectly combined with exceptional registration, high quality stan- dards, and easy handling and fast preparation all saving us time and energy. Now our operators don’t have to take

diversify into folding cartons, explained Jeff Mercier, BOPI president. “We’ve been researching the folding carton market and feel it is a perfect fit for our workflow,” he said. “After producing some short run folding carton work on both pieces of equipment, we feel we’re ready to make the move into more folding carton orders. We see it as a growth area in the near future, mostly to brand new cus- tomers as well as a few existing customers.” Jeff Fritzen, BOPI Executive Vice President, said they envision being a supplier to the trade as well. “There are printers that encounter opportunities that they can’t man- age, and this would enable us to work within the trade as well as providing finishing capabilities for their excess work for those who don’t have this equipment to do this type of work,” Fritzen said.

Corner Brook, Newfoundland based Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd. announced that, under an agreement with the government of Newfoundland and Labrador, it will sell excess green energy from its Deer Lake Power assets to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. The agreement, which benefits both entities, will better position CBPP to face increasingly challenging conditions in the global newsprint market. Furthermore, a Kruger dedicated task force will work to identify viable projects to diversify CBPP’s production in the field of wood-based bioproducts. The goal is to add revenue sources to make operations more sustainable in the long term, while also unlocking Newfoundland and Labrador’s high forest potential. Visit kruger.com .

The problem for many employees in the workplace is that they don’t believe their contributions are valued, Ryan says. They are further held back by what they deem to be “old-school ideas” and they feel misunderstood by their older leaders. “From the beginning of time, we’ve had trouble talking between the generations,” Ryan said in a past presenta- tion. “In order for us to keep this employee engagement when we have four generations working in the workplace at the same time, we need to figure out how we’re wired so that we can better communicate with each other.” Ryan will offer tips on how we learn about ourselves, and how to communicate with others who may be wired differently due to the year they were born: • The Traditionalists — Born prior to 1945, they typically had one job their entire life, climbed the corporate lad-

PRINTCHEK REPRESENTS A NEW FRONTIER IN PRINT QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR THE CORRUGATED CARDBOARD INDUSTRY PrintChek uses a series of line scan cameras to capture an image of each sheet across its entire span before being die-cut. Every sheet's size, rotation, and print quality are then compared to your set “golden standard” to identify defects as small as 2mm like skew, spots, hickeys, smears, color deviation, missing print, and more. Using PrintChek in conjunction with MeasurementChek allows you to remotely monitor production and quality statistics which you can then export via Excel for statistical analysis.
