HSD provide a comprehensive advisory health, safety and fire safety service to all Queen Mary Univer- sity of London (QMUL) staff and students. We teach and research across a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, law, medicine and dentistry, and science and engineering.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering
Queen Mary has a distinguished tradition in science and engineering, and was one of the first UK universities to establish engineering, computer science, chemistry, and materials departments. The Faculty today provides research and teaching excellence across engineering, science and mathe- matics in five academic Schools (Biological and Behavioural Sciences, Physical and Chemical Scienc- es, Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Engineering and Materials Science, and Mathemat- ical Sciences), with diverse teaching programmes that include: Psychology, Mathematics with Finance and Accounting, Materials and Design, and Digital Audio and Music Systems Engineering. Job Context
The post holder will attend Faculty health and safety meetings, support local coordinators and assist with the identification of training needs of staff and post-graduate students in the Faculty. Theywill be expected to develop and deliver rel- evant training programmes to Faculty members and participate in university wide health and safety training delivery. The post holder will ad- vise on suitable and sufficient risk assessment and risk control of the Faculty’s teaching and re- search activities. Theywill assist with the investi- gation of incidents and significant near misses/ dangerous occurrences, and will support Facul- ty safety coordinators to carry out inspections and other health and safety monitoring tasks. The post holder will be expected to provide bio- logical and chemical safety advice to the Facul- ty and chemical safety advice to the university. Additionally, the post holder will provide non ionising radiation advice to the universityand support the QMUL Radiation Protection Officer (Ionising Radiation).The post holder will lead in developing, implementing and monitoring of the University’s Chemical Safety Standards and management systems ensuring there is an effective framework for monitoring chemical safety compliance and practice.

Main duties and responsibilities
• Provide competent, professional advice, guidance and support services to all levels of staff butparticularly to those with re- sponsibility for assessing, managing and controlling risks to health andsafety in the Faculty of Science and Engineering (S&E) and assist in promoting a proactive safe- tyculture • Manage the work of the Science & Engi- neering Health and Safety Adviser, to in- clude allocatingand monitoring workloads, carrying out appraisals and monitoring con- tinued professionaldevelopment • Support and work with the Safety Coordi- nators in S&E and lead on a programme of formal healthand safety inspections • Advise on risk assessment and the control of risksin the Faculty • Develop and deliver health and safety train- ing on relevant subjects • Lead on theinvestigation of significant inci- dents and accidents in the Faculty advising on anyfollow-up actions that may arise • Collaborate with other HSD managers and develop or contribute to the development of safetypolicies, procedures, risk assess- ments, good practice and safety require- ments in laboratoryfacilities at Queen Mary • Ensure that all Schools, Institutes and De- partments are made aware of the health and safetychallenges, and compliance is- sues, regarding radioactive materials, des-

• Demonstrable experience of advising on chemical safety in a large complex organisation • Experience of diagnosing training needs and developing/delivering suitable training pro- grammes, especially hazardous substances / COSHH training • Knowledge of health & safety legislation and regulations, codes of practice, etc. governing work with radioactive materials, substances hazardous to health, machinery, optical radiation instru- ments and relevant emerging technologies.
