Job Context
The post holder will attend Faculty health and safety meetings, support local coordinators and assist with the identification of training needs of staff and post-graduate students in the Faculty. Theywill be expected to develop and deliver rel- evant training programmes to Faculty members and participate in university wide health and safety training delivery. The post holder will ad- vise on suitable and sufficient risk assessment and risk control of the Faculty’s teaching and re- search activities. Theywill assist with the investi- gation of incidents and significant near misses/ dangerous occurrences, and will support Facul- ty safety coordinators to carry out inspections and other health and safety monitoring tasks. The post holder will be expected to provide bio- logical and chemical safety advice to the Facul- ty and chemical safety advice to the university. Additionally, the post holder will provide non ionising radiation advice to the universityand support the QMUL Radiation Protection Officer (Ionising Radiation).The post holder will lead in developing, implementing and monitoring of the University’s Chemical Safety Standards and management systems ensuring there is an effective framework for monitoring chemical safety compliance and practice.

ignated hazardoussubstances and of their responsibilities to the environment and the University’s reputation • Be the single point of contact for the en- forcing authorities, and other expert prac- titioners internaland external of the Uni- versity for all Chemical Safety matters, and reporting findings as requiredby legislation, codes of practice or policy, to the Enforcing Authorities • Provide competent advice to Schools, De- partments and Institutes on matters relating to work withnon-ionising radiation. • Provide advice on safe working practices regarding hazardous laboratory waste to ensure that itis stored, handled and trans- ported correctly to be treated, disposed of, or recycled safely • Prepare, and periodically review, university- codes of practice for work with hazardous substances(laboratory chemicals, and nano- materials)and advise Schools, Departments and Institutes on thepreparationof local rules, codes of practice, standard operat- ing procedures andcontingency/emergency plans for work with hazardous substances • Equipment and Machinery –provide com- petent advice to the Science and Engi- neering Faculty onmatters relating to work with equipment, apparatus and machinery including safety policies,procedures, risk assessments, good practice and safety re- quirements in laboratory and researchwork- shop facilities • Represent the HSD in relevant stakeholder project groups and meetings with other- Schools,Institutes and Directorates

Main duties and responsibilities
• Provide competent, professional advice, guidance and support services to all levels of staff butparticularly to those with re- sponsibility for assessing, managing and controlling risks to health andsafety in the Faculty of Science and Engineering (S&E) and assist in promoting a proactive safe- tyculture • Manage the work of the Science & Engi- neering Health and Safety Adviser, to in- clude allocatingand monitoring workloads, carrying out appraisals and monitoring con- tinued professionaldevelopment • Support and work with the Safety Coordi- nators in S&E and lead on a programme of formal healthand safety inspections • Advise on risk assessment and the control of risksin the Faculty • Develop and deliver health and safety train- ing on relevant subjects • Lead on theinvestigation of significant inci- dents and accidents in the Faculty advising on anyfollow-up actions that may arise • Collaborate with other HSD managers and develop or contribute to the development of safetypolicies, procedures, risk assess- ments, good practice and safety require- ments in laboratoryfacilities at Queen Mary • Ensure that all Schools, Institutes and De- partments are made aware of the health and safetychallenges, and compliance is- sues, regarding radioactive materials, des-
