SETTLING INTO SERENITY HOW BLINK DESIGN GROUP ENVISIONED REGENT PHU QUOC’S TIMELESS INTEGRATION WITH NATURE Three years after opening, Regent Phu Quoc stands as a masterpiece of environmental harmony and sophisticated luxury. BLINK Design Group, renowned for their thoughtful ‘placemaking,’ envisioned a property that would not only capture the essence of Vietnamese culture and craftsmanship but also evolve gracefully with time, ageing natu- rally and beautifully in sync with its surroundings.

AGING WITH GRACE: THE TIMELESS BEAUTY OF NATURAL MATERIALS BLINK’s design ethos for Regent Phu Quoc was rooted in the understanding that natural materials, especially wood and bamboo, which over time take on a life of their own. The resort’s extensive use of timber was inspired by the traditional Vietnamese ‘Bovi’ truss system, with many sourced locally not just for their initial beauty, but for their potential to patina gracefully. “We’ve always believed that natural materials have a way of surprising us as they age,” says BLINK Design Group Founder and Creative Director Clint Nagata. “What we envisioned has been surpassed by how beautifully the wood has darkened and weathered over time, adding a depth and richness to the overall aesthetic.” The timbers, finished in a matte coating to maintain their organic aesthetic, have darkened slightly over the years, creating a rich contrast against the light interior walls and furniture. This ageing process was not just expected but celebrated, with BLINK fully embracing the idea that natural materials would evolve in unexpected and delightful ways. The result: a resort that feels more embedded in its environment with each passing year, with the warmth of the wood adding depth and character to the overall design.

ARCHITECTURE & NATURE: A SEAMLESS INTEGRATION BLINK Design Group’s vision for Regent Phu Quoc was always one of contrasts, blending minimalist architecture with the island’s lush natural landscape. The resort’s evolving relationship with nature has only enriched this vision, with soft foliage creeping into the interiors and playful shadows dancing across the property. The Vietnamese ‘Gian Nha’ courtyard concept has allowed for seamless flow, an integration, between the indoor and outdoor spaces, with plants and trees intertwining with the architecture to create an organic feel, as if the resort itself has grown from the land. “We aimed to design courtyards that would invite the outdoors in,” says Nagata. “Our goal was for guests to experience the seamless merging of architecture with the natural environment, and now, after three years, it feels as though the resort has truly become part of its surroundings.” The harmony between architecture and nature creates an inviting journey for guests, where moments of playful discovery are seamlessly integrated into their experience, further strengthening the bond between guests and their surroundings, grounding them to the environment.

Nestled on one of Phu Quoc’s pristine, unspoiled beaches, the resort was designed with a multi-dimensional approach, carefully balancing privacy and luxury while maximising the stunning vistas of the island’s natural beauty. BLINK’s use of local materials such as dark basalt and blue stone has proven to be an inspired choice, with the natural wear of these ele- ments only enhancing the aesthetic. As the resort matures, the landscape has grown in around it, adding layers of privacy while still preserving the breathtaking views.
