FedEx Corporation ; previously known as Federal Express and FDX Corporation – is the premier global
provider of transportation, e-commerce, and supply chain management services. With annual revenues of
about $36 billion; the organization offers integrated business solutions through a network of subsidiaries
operating independently, including FedEx Express - the world's largest express transportation organization;
FedEx Ground - North America's second largest provider of small package ground delivery service; FedEx
Freight - a leading provider of regional less than truckload freight services; FedEx Custom Critical - the
world's largest provider of expedited time critical shipments; and FedEx Trade Networks - a provider of
customs brokerage, consulting, information technology and trade facilitation solutions.
Federal Express was founded in 1973 by Frederick W. Smith. During his college years, he recognized that
the United States was becoming a service-oriented economy and needed a reliable, overnight delivery
service organization designed to solely transport packages and documents. He wrote a Yale term paper on
this idea and received a C. His professor thought it would never work. Fortunately for Frederick Smith, he
did not take it to heart and worked towards building the organization he dreamed of. FedEx Express now
delivers about 3.7 million packages per day throughout the United States and to some 220 countries
FedEx offers a wide range of services for many different people, including FedEx Same Day, FedEx First
Overnight, FedEx Priority Overnight, FedEx Standard Overnight, FedEx 2Day, FedEx Express Saver, FedEx
Ground U.S., and FedEx Home Delivery. A major strength that FedEx has today is the firm grasp on the
shipping and transportation industry, which is due to the concept of overnight express delivery. This
concept is FedEx’s major strength because FedEx was the first to exemplify the express delivery option we
have today. This has made FedEx “the world's largest express transportation organization, providing fast
and reliable delivery to every U.S. address and to more than 220 countries and territories”.
By supplying logistic services, FedEx gives its customers peace of mind while the package is in transit,
allowing the customer to know when to expect a package and where the package is at any certain time. This
is a large leap over the United States Postal Service because detailed tracking is not an option when sending
a package USPS.
FedEx services are available almost everywhere at any time. When customers' shipment is ready to go, they
can either schedule a courier pickup or drop it off at the FedEx location nearest to them. With more than
48,000 locations nationwide, there's bound to be one nearby.
At FedEx new FedEx Kinko's Office and Print Centres, and FedEx World Service Centres locations,
customers can drop off FedEx Express packages as well as FedEx Ground packages, pick up shipping
