THE EDUCATOR’S RESILIENCE CHILD & FAMIL Y GUIDE TO BUILDING Unlocking the Power of the Stories Students Tell

Educators and parents alike recognize that children don’t grow up simply by adding inches and pounds — child development is a much richer mix of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth. While children make progress at their own pace, educators can help them on their individual paths. Understanding the many ways in which children grow forms the essence of good teaching. If you appreciate the ebbs and flows of development, you can teach children with more insight and confidence, and offer support and guidance to their parents and caregivers. Problems can arise, of course, in every child’s life. Dr. Mayes’ reassuring approach helps educators understand the nature of a problem, how they can address it, and when and where to go for help with concerns such as learning disabilities, bullying, sibling rivalry, depression, anger and other difficult feelings. Micro Mentor Texts Penny Kittle

SECOND: IMITATE

There is power in taking an ordinary experience and making it more interesting. So, for a subject, I choose my seat on an airline. 36

At a time when students’ attention is being pulled in many directions, writing expert Penny Kittle shows us the power of helping them to focus in and communicate clearly. She does that through the study of “micro mentor texts,” excerpts from acclaimed books, and the decisions authors make to craft those texts so they deeply engage readers. Her book includes dozens of short texts and mini-lessons based on them—as well as many practice opportunities for students and demonstration videos for you. 176 pages • Grades 4–8 • SC-733320 • 978-1-338- 78907-2 $35.99 • Available Now

I write a list of observations:

Cold air blasts my left arm, my feet are jammed against the space in front of me, I hear the whine of engines warming up, there is a steady stream of passengers tugging roller bags, the flight attendant says, “Good morning!” to each passenger, other seated people are bent over screens, coffee cups in hand. I look at my list of observations. Cold air is an adjective-noun combination. I like that rhythm as a start. I try Airline travelers , but it sounds stuffy and formal. I delete it. Weary passengers (better!) tug (my favorite verb from my brainstorm list) roller bags, cradle coffee mugs, and slump into their seats, fastening seatbelts. I reread and do not like the repeat of seats in the last phrase. So, I revise the sentence:

3c Describe an Experience With Three Details FIRST: NOTICE In the following chart, in the column on the left, is a short passage from Boycott Blues , written by Andrea Davis Pinkney. There are several writing craft moves in just 30 words! What do you notice? Try to name what you see before you read “Details I Notice” in the column I’ve filled in on the right.

slump into worn seats, ready to fly.

You likely noticed that I imitated a list of three things to describe an experience, using parallel structure. But my structure is different from the micro mentor text’s. The passage inspired me to use a repeating pattern to define what it is like to travel by air. However, instead of a series of fragments, my phrases (verb-adjective-noun) are part of a complete sentence. This form felt most natural to me for this description. I like creating something beautiful (in my mind, at least) from the ordinary even if it leads me away from a direct imitation. When I see students do this in class, I recognize the variation and ask them why they chose it. We want students to be able to name the writing craft they use. Confident writers break patterns to craft original texts. This is what I hope micro mentor text study can do for all my students.

Boycott Blues by Andrea Davis Pinkney Well, listen good. Because here it is. Steady. Slow. A story told with steps. With tired feet. With tired bones . This story walks. And walks. And walks. To the blues.

Details I Notice

• The repetition (alliteration) of the “s” sound in steady, slow, story, steps . • The use of voice: Well, listen good implies a close relationship between reader and writer. • The intentional fragments: with tired feet. With tired bones. Students should consider why Andrea chose to write in fragments. What is the effect of these fragments on a reader? I hear steps that make the sentence walk to a beat. • The order of the list of how the story is told: steps, feet, bones . • Explore the metaphor of how a story can be told with tired bones. 35

36 Ever wonder how books get written by teachers who present at workshops, while still teaching? Fingers tapping, earplugs in, and laptop bouncing with every bit of turbulence. That’s how.

70 Micro Mentor Texts • Chapter 3

• Consider the italics for bones . We know italics create emphasis; do all our students? Why is bones in italics? • Later in the passage, Pinkney uses straight repetition: walks. And walks. And walks . The periods make the reader slow down while reading the sentence.
