Keebler Hollow Tree miniature interior set ( along left ) used in their 1980 s commercials featuring animated elves baking cookies , crackers , chips & other tasty snacks — which were rotoscoped over the physical set . The rounded interior of a craggy tree trunk is artfully carved out of cork with fine details including : Keebler “ K ” hand - painted over windows , hand - carved railing , old - world wooden plank floors , and one practical hanging brass light fixture that dimly illuminates the baking factory . Stairs , pathways , railings & ramps lead into dark crevices , giving the illusion that the elves ’ baking factory is endless — the walls often re - configured over the campaign run . Set pieces within are custom - made with great love and care , including : a “ Caramel ” crock pot , a “ Fudge ” cauldron , a “ Brown Sugar ” spice jar , an old - time metal four - burner stove , a mill contraption , chip extruder , conveyor belt & cooling table , a wooden slat oval table with trunk legs loaded with miniature snacks & packaging , an adult elf - scale four - post brass bed , a television set ( that illuminates ), a child elf - scale bedroom set , and much more . All objects acquired from advertising agency that made the spots , Leo Burnett . Restoration by veteran model makers The Chiodo Brothers , Gene Warren III & Philip Hartmann .
