THE KING’S BUSINESS

“I f there is any place where a man must have the Gospel for men, it is in such a place as San Quentin,; yet I find that Christian Science, Theosophy and New Thought are working overtime to capture these men. I f there is any one thing above all others that the readers o f T he K ing ’ s B usiness can do for these men, it is to pray; pray for them and for me that the two hours each Saturday spent with them will be spent most effectively, under the guidance o f the Holy Spirit. “ Three weeks ago there came into the class a young man who, fourteen years ago, was a pupil in the Sunday School o f which I was superintendent. The meeting was fraught with blessing for both him and me. I am sure that the year o f his confinement will be the best year thus far in his life. “ I am eager to see men newly born in y this great prison; just one such event seems to stir the place from wall to wall; pray , that, in Christ’s name, there will be a constant stirring during- the weeks to come.” cut in it, and placing it on the table I said: “ This is for our freewill offerings for the Lord, to go to our little girl in China. You must ask the Lord how He wants you to fill it.” And this is how the money came in : One girl, the oldest, 13 years o f age, cleaned her father’s suit—she did it well, too. Another littli? girl, given money to buy a luncheon at school, went without eat ing that day and put the money into the freewill offering box. One o f the boys drew sand for a neighbor. A t the supper given by the church at its annual meeting the girls asked the privilege o f washing the dishes that they might have the money for the “little girl in China.” All the chil dren did house work for friends and neigh-

I can secure another day, I shall have to cancel the prison work as far as McNeil’s Island is concerned. The field here is much larger and more responsive to the character o f work I am doing than the one I just left. The prayers o f readers o f T he K ing ’ s B usiness are earnestly requested for this important branch o f the Bible Institute work. A T SAN QUENTIN Loren S, Hanna, who took up the work in San Quentin prison when Mr. Hunter left for Seattle, writes thus to T he K ing ’ s B usiness : “ God is opening up the work for me in a remarkable way. W e have just finished a -course o f study on ‘The Place o f the Cross in Our Life.’ This week we shall begin a study o f the Epistle to the Ephesians. “While I was on my vacation, Harry I. Hill, a graduate o f the Bible Institute, looked after the class. I am sure the men would prefer to have Harry regularly, for he has a winning personality, and is a thor ough Bible student. T ORD, bless our little girl in China and help us to raise the money for her so that she need not stop school,” seemed to be the one petition on the hearts o f the eight little members o f the Junior Society. “ How much do you give each year to the little girl in China,” I asked, at the close o f the prayer season. “W e have always given her $20, but last year we had to bor row $3 from the Senior Society, and this year we have only about $6.” “ Fourteen dollars to raise. Not much money in any o f our purses. What should we do? Well, children, we’ll just pray about it, and per haps the Lord will show us how to raise $14 in three months’ time.” The next Sun day I brought a little tin box with a hole
