WORK IN THE OIL FIELDS

By Frank J. Shelley

J ULY has been a very warm month in Kern and Fresno Counties—some times 118 in the shade at Coalinga—making the buildings so warm that people have hes itated about coming to services. In conse quence the áttendance at our meetings has not been so large. The field has been well covered-during this period, and Bible-study services and the preaching of the Gospel have been carried on in the homes o f Chris tian oil men. Where such homes were not available, we have held our services in dance halls, school houses, bunk-houses, or boarding houses. W e had the use o f a church building at the American Petroleum Lease at Coalinga. The Lord allows us to gather in a few souls for Him, and we have had much blessing in helping backslidden Christians back into fellowship with Him. It seems to us it is little wondér there are so many people backslidden from God, for what with the real dearth o f spiritual teaching in these fields, the abounding worldliness, picture shows, dances, saloons, and Sunday baseball, it means stemming the tide to take a definite stand for Christ. In additions to this we sometimes find ministers like one we met last week who stated that he did not believe in the verbal inspiration o f the Scriptures, and who said .he “hated that doctrine o f the SeCond coming o f the Lord.”

W e went to a new ' field called “ The Devil’s Den,” and was told ours was the first Gospel service that had been * held there for over ten years. W e had a few professions here and God blessed the effort put forth for Him. At the Olinda field we were pleased to find a lady and gentleman who had heard the Gospel at the Institute and afterwards found the Lord in their own home,, so even though results may not be visible, we know they are certain because God has promised His W ord shall not return unto Him void. Several times I have conducted services at stations along the pipe lines where there are about ten or twelve people employed, and have had a real welcome, “ i have been here seven years,” said one o f these men, “and this is the first chance I have had to go to church.’V They work three hundred and sixty-five days in the j year, moving the oil from Maricopa to San Francisco through the station's. This is a needy field, and God has blessed my preach ing there. There has been 1 much sickness in the fields this year, a great deal o f typhoid, and the doors are opening for the truth. W e are looking forward to better work in September when the weather is cooler. Our hearts’ desire is that we, may faithfully and lovingly present the truth o f God and honor the' blessed person o f our Lord.
