from our President & Chief Executive Officer
Dear Friends,
The Elizabeth Hospice is proud to be recognized as a trusted community resource for hospice care, palliative care and grief support services. Over the past four decades, we have touched the lives of more than 120,000 people in San Diego County and Southwest Riverside County, helping our patients live each day to the fullest. Our team of physicians, nurses, social workers, spiritual counselors, home health aides, and trained volunteers provide exceptional hospice and palliative care for patients and their families. And our skilled counselors offer support and guidance for children and adults experiencing grief associated with losing a loved one. Ensuring that people facing the challenges of advanced serious illness receive the highest quality of care has always been at the forefront of our agency. For many years, The Elizabeth Hospice and others in the healthcare industry have been concerned about the negative impact of fraudulent hospice providers on the quality of care that patients and their families receive. I have been working with community leaders and agencies at the state and national levels to identify and eliminate fraud. We intend to continue serving as an example of what hospice can and should be. The extraordinary caregivers and staff members at The Elizabeth Hospice are dedicated to respecting our patients’ and their families’ choices, wishes and desires. Our care includes services that go above and beyond what is required of hospice providers. This extensive array of services includes child and adult grief support for patients and community members, veteran support, and complementary therapies. On behalf of our Board of Directors and staff, I want to thank the community for its generosity this past year. Together we ensured that children and adults have access to an experienced resource they can rely on for guidance and support when confronted with advanced serious illness and grief. We are deeply grateful for the honor of caring for those who need our services.
With gratitude,
Sarah McSpadden, RN, MSN, MHA President & Chief Executive Officer

our services
Hospice Care Hospice care is specialized care when an individual and their doctor determine that future efforts to cure an advanced life-limiting illness are no longer feasible or desirable. We offer a broad array of services for children and adults, along with comprehensive support for our patients’ loved ones. Our focus is on helping people make the most of every moment of living by ensuring they are as comfortable and pain-free as possible. Elizabeth Palliative Care Our team of care navigators is specially trained in pain and symptom management. We help improve the quality and dignity of life for patients who may continue to receive curative treatment. Pediatric Hospice Care We have a dedicated team of professionals who specialize in providing care for children diagnosed with life- limiting conditions. Caring for these children is complex because, unlike adults, their bodies continue to develop physically and emotionally throughout their illness. Since federal regulations allow children to receive curative treatment while on hospice, our Pediatric Team often works with a child’s primary care physician and specialists to relieve their symptoms and manage their pain.
Veteran Support The Elizabeth Hospice is committed to ensuring that veterans feel appreciated and receive the medical support and attention they need and deserve. Our hospice caregivers have specialized training that enables them to address post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, survivor’s guilt, and soul injury. Grief Support for Children and Teens Our comprehensive bereavement program for children and teens is free and available to everyone in the community. Grief support services include on-campus support groups in 19 school districts, peer support groups in our two Children’s Bereavement Centers, summer grief camps, and grief education for school professionals.
“My caregivers are dear and magical people, personal to the point where I would call them good friends. They listen in a way that most people don’t. They’re engaging, personable, and delightful; I look forward to each one’s visit.” Brenda , hospice patient
“Hospice was a more personal option for Kylah than being in the hospital. Kylah could be in her bed, surrounded by her family, her things, and her cats. The amazing people who work for The Elizabeth Hospice provide medical and emotional support while treating kids and parents like regular people. That’s very much appreciated.” Jennifer , mother of a hospice patient

Volunteer Services Volunteers play an essential role in our nonprofit organization. Whether engaging with our patients, providing support at events, advocating in the community as ambassadors of our work, or sewing keepsakes for families who are grieving, they make a tremendous difference in the lives of everyone we serve.
Grief Support for Adults
The Elizabeth Hospice’s licensed counselors and trained staff guide people of all ages through grief and loss. We provide a safe, supportive, and confidential environment for adults and children to address their feelings and learn healthy coping skills. Services, which include individual counseling sessions, support groups, workshops, and crisis interventions, are open to everyone in the community, including those who do not have a patient affiliation with The Elizabeth Hospice.
“My grief counselor was the light in my darkness. He answered my questions and reassured me that the way I was feeling was healthy after the loss of my husband Glenn. He helped me see that there was a future for me. This support made all the difference in the world.” Trish , grief counseling client
“Group helps me calm down. I feel really comfortable there because I made friends with other kids who understand how I’m feeling. The best days of my life are when I come to group.” Neveah , children’s bereavement program participant

community support
Light Up a Life On November 14, hundreds of people in our community came together at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, to celebrate those whose memories illuminated their lives. The celebration included music, inspirational messages and refreshments. Every Light Up a Life attendee had the opportunity to share the name of their loved one and light a candle in their honor.
Wings of Hope More than 300 community members attended Wings of Hope 2022, a butterfly release ceremony to remember and honor the people who touched their lives in a beautiful way. Everyone listened to live music, heard uplifting messages from our grief support team and enjoyed sweet treats. Wings of Hope supports people in our community who are grieving the loss of their special person.
Swing Fore Hope Golf Classic Our annual golf tournament and auction took place at Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos. The proceeds from Swing Fore Hope Golf Classic benefit children and teens grieving the loss of their loved ones and make it possible for us to provide children’s bereavement support services free of charge. We are grateful to the event participants and to our generous sponsors, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Horizon Oxygen and Medical Equipment, Marsh McLennan Agency, Tenisi Tech, and Harrah’s Resort Southern California.
