1 HEAD PROTECTION

We are proud to offer an extensive range of hard hats and accessories certified to the highest Australian Standards. Our hard hats are suited to all applications and include printable versions for easy

company and personal identification if required.

HEAD PROTECTION WHEN IT MATTERS MOST

WHATEVER THE INDUSTRY AND ENVIRONMENT, WE HAVE A TRUSTED RANGE OF SAFETY HELMETS AND ACCESSORIES THAT KEEP THE HEAD SAFE FROM SIDE IMPACT OR FALLING OBJECTS. TYPE 1 Hard hats (TG56, 57, 58 and 59 series) are made from ABS plastic . TYPE 2 Clearview hard hats are made from polycarbonate and meet type 2 Standards . This means they are also suitable for hot work environments. With vented and non-vented styles, shade attachments and the new generation Clearview series safety helmets, our Frontier range offers supreme protection, durability and comfort. All helmets and accessories are fully certified to meet Australian Standards AS/NZS 1801: 1997.

AUSTRALIAN DESIGNED AND MADE

All of Frontier’s latest high performing TG type 1 and 2 safety helmets have been specially designed and made in Australia for our harsh conditions and are not only stylish, but light weight and comfortable enough to wear all day long. They are made to exacting Australian Standards and meet both vertical and lateral impact requirements. MATERIALS USED All of our safety helmet shells are primarily made using UV stabilised high density polycarbonate (HDPC) or ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) which minimises and effectively disperses impact forces. The polycarbonate versions are ideal for the Clearview hard hat as they allow see-through visibility whilst offering UV400 sun protection. The ABS version meanwhile allows for a better painted surface and print absorption. With a low profile design and a webbed 6 point harness all Frontier hard hats offer supreme comfort for all day wear.

VENTED AND NON-VENTED OPTIONS

VENTED

WARM AIR FLOWS OUT

Because the head holds so much heat, our Frontier vented hard hats encourage air flow to keep the head cooler. Vents have been engineered to provide maximum air flow without compromising the integrity of the helmet.

NON VENTED

Frontier non-vented versions are suitable for most applications and use in areas where dust ingress to the upper head needs to be minimised.

COOLING AIR FLOWS IN

FITTING AND ADJUSTING YOUR HELMENT

RATCHET ADJUSTMENT All Frontier harnesses have been designed for ease of use and to last the distance. Adjust the helmet sizing by tightening and loosening the ratchet wheel until it is comfortable.

RATCHET ADJUSTMENT

SLIP ADJUSTMENT Adjust helmet sizing by slipping the band up and down the notches until it fits comfortably.

SLIP ADJUSTMENT

To loosen, push the band notches out of the hole.

beaverbrands.com.au I 9

CARE AND MAINTENANCE All Frontier safety helmets can be cleaned with soap and water and then dried off with a soft cloth. A helmet should never be cleaned with abrasive substances or solvents and must not be stored in direct sunlight or in contact with chemicals.

It is important that the wearer inspects their helmet regularly and any helmet showing more than superficial abrasions or scuffing to the shell, should be replaced.

WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR SAFETY HELMET OR HARNESS? To comply with Australian Standards, all helmets are marked with the month and year of manufacture. If helmets are stored in boxes and do not experience environmental extremes, the shelf life of a helmet is not limited. However, we do not recommend that a helmet should be in use five years after date of manufacture. After that time, the Australian Standard is no longer valid.

CHECKLIST

REPLACE YOUR SAFETY HELMET IF: The shell shows signs of wear or degradation e.g. colour faded or stained There are any dents, cracks, nicks or gauges in the inner or outer shell The shell feels stiff or brittle, or appears dull or chalky The date of manufacture has exceeded 5 years REPLACE YOUR HARNESS IF: One or more of the points is damaged Your harness is brittle, worn, or damaged The suspension no longer holds the helmet on securely and comfortably.

2 HEARING PROTECTION

Choosing the right hearing protection is dependent on the noise level experienced on the job or the surrounding environment. It also depends on the right fit and expected comfort level. Frontier has a number of hearing protection devices suitable for most applications.

HEARING PROTECTION

HEARING DAMAGE IS GRADUAL AND CAN OFTEN OCCUR WITHOUT THE WORKER BEING AWARE OF THE CONSEQUENCES. YET, ONCE HEARING DETERIORATION OCCURS, IT IS IRREVERSIBLE. Contributing factors to workplace noise are often compounded by secondary sources including traffic, machinery, electrical equipment and music. These are just some examples that are very predominant in today’s environment.

Awareness and preventative measures are essential to preserve hearing as long-term damage is not usually apparent until 10 to 20 years after exposure . With appropriate use of hearing protection products, noise induced hearing loss is largely preventable. Frontier’s range of hearing protection products are designed to protect against noise exposure in the workplace. Our products are certified to Australian and New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS1270) with tightly controlled quality processes.

18 I PERSONAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT CATALOGUE VOL 2

THE CLASS SYSTEM FOR NOISE LEVEL PRODUCTION Under the Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS1270, hearing protectors are tested against a range of noise frequencies and a Sound Level Conversion 80 (SLC80) rating obtained. SLC 80 is a rating defined as the difference between the sound level of the environment and the level of the sound actually heard when the hearing protection is being used. The resulting dB level is the level of sound getting through when the protector is used.

Noise-induced hearing loss is caused by prolonged exposure to loud noise. The noise damages inner ear hair cells, causing hearing loss to deteriorate over time and become permanent. Noise-induced hearing loss is largely preventable.

DUAL PROTECTION

MAXIMUM PROTECTION BUT WITH LIMITATIONS

EXAMPLE

33dB 29dB EARPLUG EARMUFF + = 38dB MAXIMUM PROTECTION

In some environments, wearing both earplugs and earmuffs is required for maximum protection, however attenuation is limited due to flanking sound transmission paths in the skull. Therefore the attenuation values of each individual hearing protector cannot be simply added.

How to Estimate Protected Noise Level with Dual Protection - Examples

To estimate protected noise level, add 5 dB to the higher NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) protector.

EARPLUG FITTING INSTRUCTIONS

In selecting the best earplug for your situation, consider noise levels and your need to communicate with co-workers or hear warning signals on the job.

1. Roll earplug with tips of fingers to compact foam into a thin crease-free cylinder.

Ensure hands and ear plugs are clean prior to fitting.

MAINTENANCE • Inspect earplugs prior to wear for dirt, damage or hardness -discard immediately if compromised • For proper hygiene, discard single-use earplugs after use

2. Insert the compressed earplug well into the ear canal. Pulling the ear outwards & upwards will make fitting easier.

3.

4. Ensure earplugs are suitably fitted as per diagram.

IMPORTANT Fit earplugs before exposing yourself to noise and wear them during the entire noise exposure. These earplugs are intended for single use only and should be disposed of after use. STORAGE Earplugs must be stored in a clean, uncontaminated area. Earplugs should not be used if the individual polybag packaging has been opened.

3 EYE & FACE PROTECTION

Our extensive range of glasses and goggles are stylish, safe, durable and you can be assured that all styles meet Australian Standards AS/NZ 1337.1:2010

EYE & FACE PROTECTION

EYE INJURY AND DAMAGE IS A REAL AND ALL TOO COMMON WORKPLACE RISK, PARTICULARLY IN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS WHERE THE INSTANCE OF CHEMICAL SPLASH, FLYING DEBRIS, PROTRUDING OBJECTS OR WORKPLACE MISADVENTURE IS RELATIVELY HIGH. Eye strain and ocular damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation is also of significant concern which is why all our eyewear lines have a minimum 99% protection against harmful UV radiation from the sun. Our safety eyewear range includes a comprehensive array of frame styles, lens shapes and coatings that mitigate risk and increase safety in the vast majority of work application areas. Our products are manufactured and certified to the most recent Australian Standards AS/NZS 1337 and comply with all identity marking requirements. WAVELENGTHS AND UV LIGHT The sun emits three types of light waves and without the correct eye protection, each in its own way can seriously affect the eye.

ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT RAYS 5% of the sun’s energy reaches the earth in this form. UV rays (invisible “tanning” rays) can cause serious damage to the unprotected eye including the development of cataracts and corneal blistering. INFRARED LIGHT RAYS 50% of the sun’s energy reaches the earth as heat or infrared. Some IR rays will be absorbed by the cornea creating a drying effect – an issue of importance to 45% of the sun’s energy reaches the earth in what the eye perceives as colour. Blue Light waves are the most difficult to see. When the unprotected eye strains to focus on it, all other colours can be distorted. After two to three hours in bright sunlight, eyes can have trouble adjusting to night vision. The human eye is not able to identify the various elements of a ray – it only sees the results, which are a function of the different wavelengths and their respective light intensity. The human eye can only see wavelengths within the “visible spectrum” (between 380 and 780 nanometres). contact lens wearers. VISIBLE LIGHT RAYS

WHAT EYE PROBLEMS CAN UV RAYS CAUSE?

MACULAR DEGENERATION UV rays may lead to macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss for older people.

CATARACT UV rays, especially UV-B rays, may also cause some kinds of cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, the part of the eye that focuses the light we see.

PTERYGIUM Another UV-related problem is a growth called pterygium. This growth begins on the white of the eye and may involve the cornea. Eventually, the growth may block vision. It is more common in people who work outside in the sun and wind.

SKIN CANCER Skin cancer around the eyelids is also linked to prolonged UV exposure.

CORNEAL SUNBURN Corneal sunburn, called photokeratitis, is the result of high short-term exposure to UV-B rays. Long hours exposed to UV light without proper eye protection can cause this problem. It can be very painful and may cause temporary vision loss.

32 I PERSONAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT CATALOGUE VOL 2

TYPE OF UV RAYS There are two types of UV rays: UV-A and UV-B. Over time, the effects of UV rays may cause a number of eye problems.

UV-A

Can hurt your central vision. It can damage the macula, a part of the retina at the back of your eye.

EYE PROTECTION STANDARD The Australian Eye Protection Standard considers the risks of injury and provides guidelines to mitigate against them. Selecting the wrong type of safety glasses or goggles in handling the application hazard can have serious consequences. It is important to consider possible risks including velocity, size and the nature of the hazard when evaluating the right eyewear. The Standards for protective eyewear provides an excellent source of information and assistance. AS/NZS 1336:1997 RECOMMENDED PRACTICES FOR OCCUPATIONAL EYE PROTECTION This Standard sets out recommended practices for the protection of the eyes of persons at work, against hazards such as flying particles, dust, splashing materials and molten metals, harmful gases, vapours and aerosols, high-intensity radiation generated during welding operations and furnace work. Guidance is given on the selection of eye protectors appropriate to the use of particular lasers. Additional guidance is provided for manufacturers and dispensers of prescription lenses on the requirements for production of prescription personal eye protectors. AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 PERSONAL EYE PROTECTION – Eye and face protectors for occupational applications • Block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation • Screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light • Be perfectly matched in colour and free of distortion and imperfection. Wear proper eye protection and hats to block the UV rays. To provide adequate protection for your eyes, eyewear should:

UV-B

The front part of your eye (the cornea and the lens) absorbs most UV-B rays, but these rays may cause even more damage to your eyes than UV-A rays.

This Standard specifies minimum requirements for non-prescription eye and face protectors and associated oculars. They are designed to provide protection for the eyes and faces of persons against common occupational hazards such as flying particles and fragments, dusts, splashing materials and molten metals, harmful gases, vapours and aerosols. Requirements for optical qualities and low, medium, high and very high impact resistance are given and appendices describing appropriate test methods are included in this Standard. Requirements for prescription-eye protectors against low and medium impact are given in AS/NZS 1337.6. Requirements for eye protectors against laser radiation are given in AS/NZS 1337, Parts 4 and 5. The aim of this Standard is to assist in the provision of safe, efficient and comfortable vision in the occupational situation, including consideration of the need for protection against sun glare and optical radiation in the natural environment. The Standard does not apply to filter oculars for protection against optical radiations generated by industrial processes, which are dealt with in AS/NZS 1338. AS/NZS 1338.1:1992 FILTERS FOR EYE PROTECTORS – Filters for protection against radiation generated in welding and allied operations

AS/NZS 1338.2:1992 FILTERS FOR EYE PROTECTORS – Filters for protection against ultraviolet radiation

*PLEASE NOTE: This new Standard supersedes the previous Standard AS/NZS 1337:1992

AS/NZS 1338.3:1992 FILTERS FOR EYE PROTECTORS – Filters for protection against infra-red radiation
