Workforce Development
Shaping The Future of Hospitality: A Year in Review As 2024 comes to a close, our Workforce Development Program reflects on a year dedicated to inspiring the next generation of hospitality professionals and addressing training and workforce challenges. Pivotal to this success has been our work in schools, where we’ve connected with thousands of students across Tasmania. More than 30 Hospitality Awareness Sessions introduced around 600 students to the diverse opportunities within the industry, offering hands-on experiences in skills like knife handling techniques, cocktail making, barista work, and front- of-house expertise. Additionally, our Hospitality Showcases, run in partnership with Drysdale across six locations, reached over 1000 students, giving them a taste of real-world hospitality careers. We also engaged students through creative initiatives like the THA Cook-Off Instagram Challenge, where 200 students from 20 schools showcased their culinary talents, and through the Hospitality Pathway Program, which supported year 11 and 12 students with career workshops, hotel tours, mock interviews, and work placements, directly connecting them with potential employers. Beyond schools, the program played a vital role in collaborating with industry and government to address workforce needs. As part of the Tasmanian Tourism and Hospitality Workforce Advisory Committee (TTHWAC), we contributed to strategies for workforce supply and retention. Partnering with the Department of Home Affairs, we are working hard to see the government ease visa restrictions, such as those for Working Holiday Makers, and explore regional migration solutions to alleviate workforce shortages.
bartender training, offering an engaging way to attract future talent, and launched the “Jack of All Trades” social media challenges to highlight the diverse roles within the industry.
As we look to 2025, our commitment to expanding outreach, fostering collaboration, and embracing new approaches remains steadfast. Together, we’re working on a vibrant future for Tasmanian hospitality, ensuring its continued role as a cornerstone of the state’s identity and economy.
Have a safe, merry (and profitable) Christmas and Happy New Year.
