Iowa Iowa's all-offender ignition interlock law will go into effect July 1, 2018. From 2006 to 2020 in Iowa, interlocks stopped 184,148 attempts to drive drunk with a breath alcohol concentration of .08 or greater, including 26,989 attempts to drive drunk in 2020. Why does MADD call the law all-offender? In order for any to drive during a driver license agency administered drunk driving license suspension, the person must install an interlock for at least six months. Grade: D- (61/100) Interlocks in Iowa prevent many drunk driving attempts. These devices could be more effective in lawmakers enacted improvements to close loopholes in the law. A big improvement needed is enacting a compliance-based removal aspect to the law.

1. Apply for the Iowa DOT Temporary Restricted License. 2. Contact insurance provider to get SR-22 insurance. 3. Follow up with the DOT to ensure that person have met all requirements for your restricted license. 4. Schedule an appointment to have an interlock device installed. 5. Visit a DOT Drivers License Center and bring completed paperwork for your restricted license. Pay any remaining fees. 6. Complete any pending court regulations.
