X2O Virtual Classroom at Executive Education HEC Montréal

EXPLORING THE IMPACT AND CHALLENGES OF EDTECH ON PEDAGOGY Bernardo Amador , Education Partnerships Manager at X2O Media, tells David Woods-Hale how the effective use of edtech impacts students and faculty, and how learning design must evolve along with advancements in technology

There has always been a clear delineation between different teaching methods and an individual purpose for online learning, learning management

How can collaborative technology be used to support the evolution of pedagogical delivery?

and investment in the solution. In addition, the need to maintain a level of investment through the recruitment of new students, and the continuation of a seamless learning environment for students already enrolled prove challenging too. Faculty members must also adapt their way of working, understand how to use the technology, and test new styles of teaching to support a shift to remote learning environments, yet deliver the same outcome of a physical lesson. Collaborative technology can help with these challenges by providing access to quality teaching irrespective of location and offering flexible learning environments.

Edtech is an enabler for a shift in teaching methods, helping to bridge the gap between teacher and student-centred learning by providing synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. With collaborative tools, institutions can continue to diversify their teaching approach by sharing engaging and relevant content. In addition, encouraging group activities allows for a greater diversity of viewpoints and an enriching exchange of ideas which helps create a more effective learning experience. This collectively ensures that learning can be delivered in a dynamic and flexible way to meet the varied learning styles of students. What challenges do Business Schools face when using new technological solutions, and how can they overcome them? Naturally, the pressure of repurposing existing infrastructure, resources and budget has proved to be a key driver for adopting short-term technological solutions that can assist with delivering blended learning environments. Look for a solution that can offer a virtual learning environment that accommodates remote and in-room audiences, as this will maximise the longevity

systems and classroom- based learning. However, with the evolution of blended learning, the landscape is shifting, and Business Schools have been forced to embrace and adopt new digital strategies to evolve their ways of delivering pedagogy. Educational technology (edtech) has become a key factor to support how they do this.

What is the impact of using collaborative technology for students, instructors and Business Schools?

From a student perspective, technology that offers a blended learning environment with the opportunity to collaborate and interact with their peers greatly improves their online learning success. We have seen that students feel more comfortable and confident with digital solutions, interacting more, asking questions, and sharing ideas within the collaborative forum. Lessons provided in this way also help a student’s mental wellbeing by enabling an element of normality and interaction in circumstances
