Commemorating 200 years in the making, Quincy, Illinois is 2025’s historic destination of the Midwest. Built on beauty and value, the scenic small city along the Mississippi River bluffs was established in 1825 for a whopping 60 bucks. John Wood of Moravia, NY set his sights on the sweeping landscape and a vision was born. Quincy and the County of Adams donned their names from the newly elected president, John Quincy Adams.

MIDSUMMER ARTS FAIRE / WASHINGTON PARK
Downtown Quincy, aka The District, is truly the hub of some of the best offerings in the city. It’s centered around Quincy’s first park and contains landmark buildings galore. In fact the entire 12-square block area is a National Register Historic District. Scores of locally owned boutique shops, restaurants and pubs reside in The District, making it a premier destination for dining, entertainment and shopping. The organization also hosts public community events and is part of the Illinois Main Street Program, supporting communities to bring prosperity to historic downtowns. ellooo, Summer! We love the month of June. School’s out, gardens are flourishing, and Flavor Tours launch for the season. SeeQuincy’s guided Foodie Tours delight visitors and locals all summer long, offering the best way to experience the culinary culture of downtown Quincy. Passionate chefs of six locally owned eateries share prized food and drink menus each Saturday. The 3-hour adventures stroll through the historic streets around Washington Park, the Farmers Market, and boutique shops. The morning begins with coffee, of course, at The Pour Haus , which serves double duty as coffee house by day and cocktail lounge by night (translation: boozy coffee available). Tours proceed to fresh brunch courses, Italian favorites, and finger-lickin’ good barbeque — with the occasional side of yodeling. The affable owner of Platt Daddy BBQ not only has a knack for concocting sweet and tangy goodness, but can belt out a classic round of yodeling on command. The afternoon concludes at the wildly popular Quincy Brewing Company , where relaxation is strongly encouraged, ice cold craft beer in hand. Savor the tastes of summer, see incredible architecture, and hear entertaining nuggets of the city’s past along the way. Reserve your Flavor Tour early, as they sell out quickly.

SPAGHETTI & MEATBALLS Italian immigrants to the US introduced the pairing of spaghetti noodles with meatballs & marinara as a main course in the 1800s, adapting to the American way of having a starch at dinner: the bigger the meatball, the more prosperous the family or so it goes. TIRAMISU > MEATBALLS POMODORO handmade meatballs from pork & beef with fresh tomato sauce 131 N 4TH / 217.222.9560 THE ENGLISH MUFFIN In the late 1800s, British immigrant Samuel Bath Thomas began hawking his muffs in NYC, using a method of pan frying distinguishing his from the UK version, Toaster Crumpets . THYME SQUARE BAKERY & CAFÉ > HOUSE CURED LOX BENEDICT / 615 HAMPSHIRE / 217.224.3515 THE CUBAN SANDWICH Cuban immigrants in Tampa, FL are noted as adapting the original Cuban , which was made with fish, to The Historic Tampa Cuban Sandwich. SIDELL’S BAKERY 500 HAMPSHIRE / 217.214.4953 THE HAMBURGER German immigrants opened US restaurants serving plates of ground beef called Hamburg Steaks; some say the bun came about when street vendors didn’t want to provide forks. 8TE OPEN > MAYOR SCHOLZ’S DOUBLE SMASH BURGER / 601 MAINE CHIMICHANGA In the 1920s, Monica Flin owner of El Charro’s Cafe in Tucson, AZ, was cooking burritos and accidentally dropped one in hot oil, cussed in front of her nieces & nephews and changed the swear word to Chimichanga. EL RANCHERITO / 307 N 36TH / 217.228.2182 SWISS STEAK These pounded steaks made from inferior cuts of beef may have gotten their name from the English word “swissing,”-- smoothing out cloth. Recipe introduced in the US by the Swiss in 1895. COACH HOUSE > COUNTRY FRIED STEAK / 2431 BROADWAY / 217.223.8040 GENERAL TSO’S CHICKEN Created as we know it in America, NYC Chef Tsung Ting Wang tweaked the original version for American tastes in the 1970s, transforming the spicy dish into battered chicken & sweet sauce. FIRST WOK / 3030 BROADWAY / 217.222.8888 GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE In 1852, American baker Sam German invented a mild dark baking chocolate. In 1957, Texas homemaker Mrs. George Clay submitted a cake recipe using German’s chocolate to a Dallas newspaper, leading to a nationwide craze. WASHINGTON PARK 5TH & MAINE Q uincy was well known to Abraham Lincoln and where he counted some of its residents among his closest friends. It was here that the sixth Lincoln-Douglas Debate occurred in Washington Square (now Washington Park). With an estimated crowd of 12,000 in attendance, Quincy was the largest community in which Lincoln and Douglas debated. It marked the turning point of the campaign and Lincoln’s career, as he made his strongest public stand yet against slavery. Today Washington Park’s four acres is anchored by a Lorado Taft bas-relief sculpture depicting the debate. The commemorative plaza includes an 1858 map of the United States and six “point/counterpont” debate quotes.
The Quincy Museum is a 20,000-sq-ft mansion built in 1890 for Richard Newcomb, one of Quincy’s four millionaires in 1904. Today, the first floor is restored in high style Victorian, while the second & third floors feature rotating exhibits. Special events year-round. 1601 MAINE / 217.224.7669 thequincymuseum.org
