WINTER 2024
This issue marks the seventh year and twenty-fifth edition of the newsletter. Time really does fly by fast. It’s hard to believe that I have been out of LA since 2007 seems just like yesterday. Even further back being at the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero in San Francisco at midnight for the change of the century only 25 years ago. In December 2018, I decided to write a quarterly newsletter. I looked across the country to find a newsletter company to work with. It was daunting and depressing. Most companies were living in the time of the Saturday Evening Post. Finally, I found Newsletter Pro out of Idaho. Go figure, I only knew of potatoes from Idaho. The way it was supposed to work was they would interview me and then write a cover story and then I would choose some filler articles. Meaning for a fee they would create and compose the newsletter and then send it out. No extra work for me. Sounds good, but that’s not what happened. After reviewing their first draft, I realized that I would have to write it and Lindsey would have to design it. With five to six articles per newsletter, that’s more than one hundred twenty-five articles plus graphics and photos. Since many of you have told me you like it; I will carry on. TIME AFTER TIME
Lindsey creates the graphics and we secure the layout and once we feel it’s right, off it goes to Idaho where incidentally this year, I will be skiing. Never been to ski in Idaho nor Montana, so next year maybe Montana. There the pros at Newsletter Pro collate, print, and mail it for your future enjoyment. We have them here all framed and hanging on the walls of the practice since we are proud of them, probably because we took the effort to create them. It does show time continually moves. For our patient population, time affects their situation and while many are still with us, many have gotten out of Dodge, so we are always looking for new people and helping them to resolve their dental needs. The best new patients are the ones you, our patients, refer to the practice. I appreciate your efforts on my behalf over the years and always strive to go above and beyond. Our goal is to give you more in service value than what you pay us for and the Newsletter is created with that in mind.
Wishing you continued health, happiness and prosperity and seeing you in 2025.

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO?
HOW ABOUT READING A GOOD BOOK?
perspective. Omerta by Mario Puzo in the vein of the Godfather novel and Mischief by Ed McBain, one of his 87th precent crime novels. Finally, Black Out by Simon Scarrow about Nazis and a serial murderer in Berlin in 1939. It’s a good one and very fast read.
Also on the same streaming service is Tulsa King with Sylvester Stallone who plays a mob boss from NY now in Oklahoma. He can actually play the part and he’s progressed from It’s Not Over and Adrianne. It’s the mob in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the problems he has in starting up his own crew. Finally, the best of the recent past is The Penguin on MAX. Now I’m not a big Batman fan, especially growing up on the Batman TV show starring Adam Ward, but this series is good and Collin Farrel as the Penguin plays it very well. The season finale ending is satisfying. Unfortunately, season 2 will not air until 2027 since the show is considered a run up to next year’s new Batman movie. If you haven’t seen it, there’s Breaking Bad on Netflix and with 60 episodes it will keep you occupied for quite some time, followed by the movie sequel EL Camino. Finally, if you’ve got a day where you’re locked away here’s a series for you. I watched all five episodes in one sitting. It’s the HBO series Chernobyl which is excellent and really immerses you in what happened there. It is TV worth watching, unlike most else on HBO.
Or Something to Stream?
You’re bored and want something to do. The easiest and most satisfying for me is reading a book. Not the nook but the old hardcover tome. I read one hour per day pretty much every day before sleeping. Easily completing at least 40 books per year. I’m a sequential reader doing one book at a time. Some of my friends read consecutively reading two to three books simultaneously. I give a book fifty pages. If it’s a dud, it’s returned to Amazon or wherever I purchased it. When in Strands or a physical book store just holding the book and reading a few paragraphs, I can tell if the author can write and if it’s worth my time. Here are some recent books I have read. You Like It Dark by Stephen King – short stories by the macabre king. Conclave by Robert Harris, trouble in the Vatican in choosing a new pope. A Rumor of War by Philip Caputo on the Vietnam War from a soldier’s
I’ve been watching Blue Bloods for the past 14 years. Intelligently written and after all these years familiar. Yes, I subscribe to Paramount Plus with no commercials. It is impossible to watch a 46-minute show with 14 minutes of commercials and the networks know it. The show is being cancelled even with the stars taking a 25% cut in pay and the ratings still strong. If you subscribe to streaming services, here are a few others worth watching. The Old Man with John Lithgow and Jeff Bridges now with two seasons completed about a CIA operation in the Middle East. How can you not like Bridges, he was the Dude in The Big Lebowski. Then there’s The Lioness with Zoe Saldana from Avatar and the cold one Tom Cruise’s former Nicole Kidman. This is basically SEALS, Green Beret types solving situations. Now in season two on Paramount Plus.
No, we’re not talking about an outer space invasion from Mars but an invasion of bacteria within you. There is good bacteria and bad bacteria, and this is the bad one. Anaerobic bacteria now reside within your oral cavity. They like to reproduce and they like to do it in your mouth, why because that’s what they do and your mouth is an ideal environment for them to procreate. Inside your mouth it is warm and around one hundred degrees. It is also dark since there is no internal lighting and most important, there is a continual source of food. If you’re living, you’re eating. A warm, dark place with abundant food supplies is just what’s needed to get this show on the road. When you do not adequately clean your teeth, a thick sticky residue called plaque accumulates. Consider this plaque a city of bacteria that’s growing. Maybe you want to do some demolition work to remove these little buggers. It’s easy if you’re flossing and brushing twice per day. You’re ruining their day but making yours. Clean teeth are healthy teeth and with your regime of daily cleanings along with a healthy diet and regular professional cleanings will keep you out of trouble. If you are lazy about cleaning your teeth, then the plaque will build up and produce acids which damages the enamel or outside layer of your teeth, leading to tooth PLAQUE ATTACK
decay. Like an iceberg, most of the plaque is hidden and invades into the area under your gums leading to irritation and eventual gum disease. This is problematic since the gums hold your teeth into your jaws. A beautiful smile starts with healthy teeth and gums and if not kept up to snuff due to plaque build-up, it will eventually ruin your day. So, if you are experiencing a plaque attack, it’s time to schedule your teeth cleaning appointment. You and your teeth will be glad you did.

SIMPLE WAYS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR TEETH
Maybe you lift weights to build strength, but are you doing things to strengthen your teeth?
Brushing twice per day and flossing once per day is vital if you want to strengthen your teeth. Be careful not to brush too hard and always brush at a forty-five degrees angle with a soft bristled toothbrush using short and decisive strokes. Brush for at least two minutes and don’t forget your tongue as bacteria love to linger in places your toothbrush misses.
There are ways to strengthen your teeth. Just like you want to have strong bones, having strong teeth is also advantageous. Having a healthy diet, good oral hygiene, and regular dental checkups is a good start.
The saliva that you produce after you brush your teeth can also help prevent demineralization as it contains proteins and minerals that will safeguard the
Tooth enamel is the hard surface of your teeth, which needs to be strong and healthy to prevent dental decay from penetrating into the interior of the tooth leading to dental problems. Enamel can weaken due to genetics, illnesses and/or poor oral hygiene habits. Brushing too strongly with a stiff

toothbrush can wear down the enamel surface. Unlike your bones, your teeth do not have regenerative cells so once the enamel is worn down it will not build back up. Fermentable carbohydrates which are found in breakfast cereals, crackers, breads, bananas, soft drinks, candy, cookies and other starchy foods form harmful and dangerous acids on your teeth. When combined with bacteria, those acids will start to break down the enamel. This demineralization process literally eats away at the naturally produce minerals in your enamel. Clearly meaning that highly processed foods and sweet treats will cause demineralization of your tooth enamel over time.
of your mouth thereby reducing acid production. Our early ancestors had quite a different diet from us and showed very little signs of weakened tooth enamel. New York City water is fluoridated which helps to keep your enamel strong. A healthy diet includes whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. So, keep on brushing and may the floss be with you.

SALADS FOR EVERYONE
We have to have lunch for it keeps us going. Since we want something light but still filling, we’re into salads. Three local salad bars in the area are Sweet Greens which is the easiest since it’s right next door. Venturing a little further away is Just Salad and finally it you want to take a stroll, there’s Chopt. In reality, you’re getting a bowl of lettuce for fifteen dollars but healthier than most other local fare if you nix the bread and dressing.
