Looking for an Attorney? Would You Hire This Guy?
Picture this: You were just rear-ended by some knucklehead texting his girlfriend. You immediately feel pain and think, “I need an attorney!”
I learned this when I was a kid working in my dad’s gas station in New Jersey. He used to say, “There’s a butt for every seat” (It’s N.J., so I kept it clean). “They need wheels, but you never know who’s going to want a little car or who’s going to want a big car.” Of course, sometimes people buy whatever car the guy on TV is selling. Maybe they assume that if they buy a Cadillac, they will always have a beautiful woman sitting next to them while they drive, just like in the ads (Who remembers the movie “Crazy People”?). Or if they drink Corona beer, they will be surrounded by beautiful women in bikinis on the beach, all laughing and playing volleyball 24/7. That’s not the way the world works, at least 99.9% of us know this. The same principle applies to choosing an attorney. There is an attorney out there for everybody. But if you hire the guy on TV just because he’s on TV, you have no guarantee he will be the right attorney for you. At our firm, we see this firsthand. We have been called in many times to help people who took the easy way out, hired the TV guy, and then found out that he didn’t return their phone calls or answer their emails. The best thing to do if you are injured in an accident is your homework! The attorney-client relationship can be one of the most important relationships in your life. For a personal injury claim to work to your advantage, a relationship of mutual trust must exist between you and your attorney. You increase those chances by doing your homework. Of course, you might get lucky and discover that the guy yelling at you on TV is the right guy to hire. But you might also hit the lottery too. The chances are about the same. Call a friend of a friend’s attorney who practices family law. 5. Call the guy who mysteriously appeared in the ER and handed you his card and some papers to sign.
What could possibly go wrong?

really matters. The quickest way to narrow your search is to read the attorney’s client reviews. What have other people said about this law firm and this attorney? What do you want in an attorney?

Many young adults seem to think they will live forever. Our young clients are frequently surprised when we tell them everybody needs an estate plan, not just the elderly. Preparing for the end of life by creating a will and other important documents actually marks the beginning of “adulting”! I don’t want to sound morbid, but life is short. We don’t know what is going to happen, but we can develop plans to cover every possibility. If you’re over the age of 18, you should have several documents. A power of attorney authorizes a trusted person to make financial or legal decisions for you if you are incapacitated. A health care surrogate is a designee authorized specifically to make health care decisions if you are unconscious, such as consenting to surgery, blood transfusions, or medications. A living will addresses more serious circumstances, instructing your doctors and loved ones on what measures to use to sustain your life if you are unable to give directions yourself. This spares your loved ones from having to guess what you would want. Finally, a last will and testament comes into play only after you have died. Even if you don’t have a large amount of assets, this document makes your wishes clear, averting any confusion among surviving loved ones. With these documents, I tell clients, you are buying insurance that you hope you will never use. Nobody wants to designate a health care surrogate or create a power of attorney or living will. And we hope you will never need them. But isn’t it better to have them and know they’re in place — just in case? These documents aren’t expensive, and creating them is an unselfish gesture on your part. You are showing your family, “I have covered this need. I have already thought through my end-of-life plans. You don’t have to make decisions for me because I have laid out here what I want.” The current generation of young adults is already more aware of the importance of estate planning than their elders at the same life stage. More than one-third of Americans ages 28–43 already have a will or trust, according to Trust & Will, a planning platform. Join the trend. Make responsible end-of-life planning your goal for 2025.
