Genetics for the Long Run . . .
Welcome to Connelly Angus! Welcome to our 35th Annual “Genetics for the Long Run” Production Sale. This year will be our 51th year in the seedstock business. This year’s sale offering promises to be one of the most exciting ever. The bulls selling represent the top 48% of the calf crop from a cowherd developed for generations of long term proven longevity. As I look back on the year 2025, It was another dry son of a gun here. Pastures were running on empty till we caught some good rain in the first part of August and helped get us through the summer. Our cattle must get by on what mother nature dishes out without any supplements. This is a testament to the fertility and longevity of our cowherd and the genetics we sell. We are very proud to show proof of this by 18% of our program’s cowherd aging 10 to 17 years old and still in production. In addition, our open rate this past year was less than 4 %. Fertility and longevity do yield huge returns when compared to all the other numbers and extremes the industry is chasing. The American Angus Association finally came out with an EPD that means something to a cattle producer. Functional Longevity is what they call it or FL in EPD listing. The association states, which I agree with “ Cow longevity is a major factor in ensuring a herd remains profitable and sustainable”. This EPD exposes the poor fertility in a lot of blood lines. Especially those that are based on single trait selection or extreme numbered cattle or sometimes just because they look pretty. Our breeding philosophy has always been centered around producing problem free females with excellent longevity that can survive and excel in a commercial rancher’s environment. This can only be accomplished with females that have excellent structure, feet, superior udder and teat qualities. We believe in a moderate framed cow that milks well while holding her condition and can consistently wean off a heavy calf. In our program, we place high emphasis on fertility, carcass quality, natural thickness, maternal traits, fast growth, quiet dispositions and moderate birth weights. At Connelly Angus we have been stacking cow families with these characteristics to produce an elite cowherd that can produce a consistent and quality product. We are focusing on bloodlines that leave you with females that can bring in a good calf year after year for the long run. You cannot build a cowherd and get ahead with a high percentage of open young cows. When you look at all the different agriculture commodities out there, the cattle business has the most positive outlook for the future. When you study the dynamics of the industry, the future looks promising with some really good years ahead for the rancher to enjoy. A high percentage of the bulls selling are calving ease bulls that will work great on both heifers and cows without giving up weaning weights or performance. There is also a group of high-performance bulls for the cows that will certainly give you that extra bump in weaning weights. We did not receive carcass data back on our steers again this past year. In the past our steers carcass data came back with the group grading 100% choice and 26% prime. This shows our cattle have the carcass genetics to improve any program. The bulls have been developed on a high roughage ration to grow out, NOT FATTEN. Their ration was designed for a 2.75-pound ADG. They are very athletic and should be able to cover a lot of country. All bulls will be veterinary inspected, and semen tested before sale day by Dr Barr Gustafson, DVM. We have decided to utilize genetic enhanced EPD’s through HD50K DNA technology on the entire sale offering again this year. You can read more about this on page 4 of this catalog. Our sale will be broadcast on DV Auction this year for those who cannot attend the sale. We also have a limited number of phone lines to utilize if you would like. All cattle sell with the Connelly Angus guarantee. If you are unable to attend the sale, we offer a sight unseen satisfaction guarantee on the sale offering. We invite you to come join us on Tuesday, February 24th and have lunch, visit and enjoy the day. All cattle are available for your inspection at the ranch before the sale and on video at our website. If we can offer any additional information or assistance, feel free to contact us. Sincerely, The Connellys
