LETTER FROM THE President

Living the Mission: To Serve Reflections from President Annie Heidersbach

Dear Elyria Catholic Community,

At Elyria Catholic, our mission calls us to learn, worship, and serve, guided by Catholic tradition. In this edition of the Prowl , we pause to focus on the third word in that call: to serve . To serve means more than a single act of kindness—it is a way of life rooted in gratitude and love. Whether through professional vocations, ministry, volunteer commitments, military service, or the quiet daily acts of compassion that go unseen, our alumni continue to live out this part of the mission in inspiring ways. Their stories remind us that an EC education is not meant to end at graduation; it is intended to ripple outward, shaping families, communities, and even the world. As you read about these men and women, I hope you are encouraged by the many ways Panthers of every generation have answered Christ’s invitation: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40). Their examples also invite each of us to consider how we, too, are called to serve—here and now, in the opportunities placed before us. I am deeply grateful to walk alongside a community where service is not only taught, but embraced and lived out with joy. Together, may we continue to build a culture where learning, worship, and service remain at the heart of all we do.

“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” – Matthew 25:40

With gratitude,

“To serve means more than a single act of kindness— it is a way of life rooted in gratitude and love.”

Annie Heidersbach President

P.S. I would love to hear how you serve—in your family, parish, workplace, or community. Visit elyriacatholic.com/storiesofservice to share your story, so together we can build a living mosaic of Panther service in action.

ALUMNI Spotlight Michael LAPPI ’85 Entering life’s “third phase,” EC alum returns to campus by Dan Minnich ’80

Mike Lappi ’85 says he’s learned over the years that life can be divided into three phases: “The first phase is developing your own foundation, trying to decide what you want to do with your life. The middle phase is delivering on what it is you said you were going to do. The final phase is more about the giving back…what it is you want to give to the next generation and how can you do that in a meaningful way.” Regarding that third phase, Mike has been thinking about Elyria Catholic a lot in recent months, as he helped plan the 40th year reunion for the senior class of the EC football team. Those thoughts have taken him back to his time at the school—in honors programs, taking pre- college track coursework, and especially to being part of a football team that went 44-0-1 and earned two state championships. He jokes, “The days that I spent, let’s say training on the practice field at EC, ended up being very similar to the days that I spent preparing for my job in the military.” Mike says his education and hard work at Elyria Catholic helped him through his undergraduate

career at the University of Miami, later earning a medical scholarship from the Navy. His postgraduate work includes a master’s degree and PhD at The Ohio State University while simultaneously earning a medical degree at Ohio University. Oh, and then he did his medical residency at Harvard. While on active duty in the Navy, Mike served as a surgery intern at Bethesda Naval Hospital then practiced undersea medicine, focusing on submarines and special forces. He remains a Navy reservist and will mark 32 years as a Navy doctor in November. Mike has enjoyed an extraordinarily successful career in the private sector. He’s currently the Chief Medical Officer for Corning Incorporated. The company that created countless pieces of cookware decades ago has now become a multinational corporation focused on revolutionary glass components for mobile phones, display screens, pharmaceutical vials, and automobiles, in addition to gasoline particulate filters and fiber optic cables

providing the foundation for the AI revolution. Mike describes his role as being like the U.S. surgeon general, but for the company. The job includes overseeing a global team of doctors, nurses and other support personnel providing medical services for Corning’s 60,000+ employees at more than 140 sites around the world. The 40th year anniversary of the championship EC football team brings Mike back to thinking about what he wants to do in his “third phase” of life—the time of giving back. He recalls something he learned from a great photographer years ago, who told him that when taking a picture, it’s easy to focus only on what’s in front of you and forget about the background, which is really what makes the photo. Mike feels that can apply to life as well. “It’s the background that created what you’re seeing and that frames what you’re doing, where you’re going. I think EC created that really solid background for me and my guess is that’s the same for my classmates.”

ALUMNI Spotlight Margarita PADUA Young Alum Achieves a Dream

’15

by Dan Minnich ’80

For Margarita Padua ’15, the path to Elyria Catholic was not a straight line, but it proved to be life-changing. A proud Lorain native, Margarita attended Lorain City Schools through sixth grade before her mother decided to enroll her in Catholic education. After two years at St. Peter’s in Lorain, Margarita spent one semester at Magnificat High School before transferring to EC, encouraged by a cousin and motivated by both practical and personal reasons. “I really loved my EC experience,” Margarita reflects. One of her biggest influences was theology teacher Kevin Juguilon, who deepened her faith and inspired her to become a Peer Minister. She also found joy on stage as a member of the Drama Club, performing in plays and musicals that helped her build confidence and friendships.

After graduation, Margarita attended Lorain County Community College and later transferred to the University of Akron, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in social work. Her mother, also a social worker, had instilled in her a passion for service and community engagement at a young age. “When I was 12, my mom got me involved in a community organizing movement called Reclaim Lorain. That experience, along with my deep involvement at Sacred Heart Chapel, shaped me into a leader.” By 16, she was already serving on her church’s pastoral council, which became her first board position. While pursuing her education, Margarita gained work experience in a variety of roles, often rising into leadership positions. “I’ve been blessed that people recognized my leadership qualities, and

I was always encouraged to step up,” she shares. After college, she worked with El Centro and the National Youth Advocate Program before stepping away briefly for maternity leave. Her return to the workforce brought her to Leadership Lorain County, where she began part-time and quickly advanced to Director of Outreach and Development. In 2024, when the organization’s long-time president announced her departure, Margarita, then just 27 years old, was encouraged by the board to apply for the role. Though hesitant at first, she embraced the challenge and was appointed Chief Executive Officer, becoming one of the youngest nonprofit leaders in the region. “It’s truly a dream job,” she says. “I feel very passionate about the work we do, and I’m grateful every day to lead an organization that shapes and empowers leaders across our community.” Her Elyria Catholic roots continue to influence her journey. Through Leadership Lorain County, she worked on launching a high school leadership cohort, with EC as the first school she reached out to. She has also returned to campus as a guest speaker, sharing her story on Career Day and encouraging students to develop their leadership skills. “I’m happy to stay engaged with EC,” Margarita says. “The school gave so much to me, and I look forward to giving back in whatever way I can.”

ALUMNI Spotlight

Mitch CARSON An Alum Prepares to Enter the Priesthood ’16

by Dan Minnich ’80

The long road to becoming a priest began at Borromeo Seminary. After two years there, he moved to the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he finished his undergraduate degree and earned a master’s in philosophy. He then returned to Northeast Ohio and St. Mary Seminary, where he is in his final year of preparation. With his priestly ordination mere months away, Deacon Mitch is anxiously awaiting the opportunity to begin his ministry. “You get to minister to so many people at really beautiful moments of our lives in a beautiful and joyful way.” Deacon Mitch will soon interview with the committee of priests that makes recommendations on parish assignments to the bishop. While he has remained in touch with his alma mater, he might have an opportunity to be around the hallowed halls on the corner of Gulf and Poplar a bit more often. “Lorain County has a special place in my heart. I think it would be really cool to minister there.”

Next spring, an Elyria Catholic alum hopes to begin a vocation for which he has spent the past decade preparing and that reflects exceedingly well on his alma mater. Mitchell Carson was ordained a transitional deacon earlier this year, and next spring he is scheduled to wrap up preparations for the priesthood that began shortly after his 2016 high school graduation. Deacon Mitch says his Elyria Catholic experience played a key role in his decision to pursue the priesthood. “It was the environment in which it was possible to hear the Lord inviting me.” Mitch says morning Communion services had a significant impact. “At the start of the day it was about being around the Lord and being around people who wanted to take time to be around the Lord.” He says Mr. Juguilon’s theology classes also helped him hear the Lord’s call. “I think they made me aware that faith is something that you can involve your whole mind in…and

something that I could actually give my life over to instead of just tolerating on Sundays.” He had three brothers who all attended EC, so there was no doubt where he would go to high school. But some classmates may be surprised about his decision to attend the seminary. “I didn’t really tell anyone about it. I told everybody I was going to Ohio State because that was the plan initially.” Something that surprised new friends in high school was one of his two extracurricular activities. Deacon Mitch played offensive lineman for the Panther football team all four years. His other school activity outside of classes was a bit more in line with what he describes as a bookish and introverted high school persona: membership on the Academic Challenge team. Deacon Mitch is the son of Dennis and Rhonda Carson of Columbia Station. He attended St. Peter School in North Ridgeville.

Amari LIND

Amari’s Spiritual Journey… Back in 2024, Senior Amari Lind began his spiritual journey–a path that would lead him closer to God and deepen his understanding of what it means to live a life rooted in faith. On April 28, 2024, Amari took his first official step. At St. Jude Parish in Elyria, Amari was baptized by Fr. Joe Scalco. Just a week later, on May 6, he received his First Holy Communion. As Amari continued on this journey, he was blessed to be guided by Fr. John Seabold from Our Lady Queen of Peace in Grafton. Through his mentorship, he grew in understanding, prayer, and confidence as he prepared for his confirmation. Exactly a year after Amari’s baptism, on April 27, 2025, he was confirmed by Bishop Edward Malesic at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Cleveland. Amari reflects on his journey— Becoming Catholic has been one of the most meaningful decisions of my life. For me, it all really started in the classroom. My teacher, Mr. Juguilon, was the person who made me want to pursue my faith more deeply. The way he taught about Catholicism was different, he made learning about

“Our school prides itself on the Pillars of Elyria Catholic. Just like a table, the more legs it has, the more stable it is. The last pillar; Community of Church, school, and family, is an important one. We are happy to see when our student-athletes make the choice to enter the faith on their own accord. We celebrate #8 Amari Lind into the Catholic Church.” – EC Lacrosse Coach David Francway

it fun, engaging, and real. Instead of just memorizing facts, he showed us the beauty, the traditions, and the benefits of living with faith at the center of our lives. His passion inspired me and made me realize that faith wasn’t just something you study, it’s something you live. Through that experience, I started to understand what it meant to grow closer to God and to become part of something bigger than myself. I saw the sense of community, love, and guidance that the Catholic faith offers, and I wanted to be part of it. One Bible verse that has always stood out to me during this journey is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This verse reminds me that choosing to walk in faith is trusting that God has a plan for my life, and that being Catholic is part of that plan.

THE BLESSING OF THE CROSS COMMUNITY Spotlight

by Ed Bansek

The Elyria Catholic Panther community gathered together on September 3, 2025 to celebrate with a Blessing of the Cross ceremony on Panther Plaza. The occasion marked the dedication of the new cross atop the clock tower in memory of Steve and Bertha Komives whose son Steven graduated from EC in 1965. Following a school Mass in the Coliseum, EC President Annie Heidersbach invited everyone outside to Panther Plaza where the participants received a blessing from Father Deo. Amari Lind, a current Elyria Catholic Senior, gave a short gospel reading from the Book of John, while the Responsorial Psalm was led by Jessica Strauser ’26, and the Intercessions by Allyson Hopiard ’29. Father Deo led everyone in reciting the Lord’s Prayer and the blessing of the new cross. Fr. Deo dismissed everyone with the hope that the cross will inspire all who see it and be a sign of peace, unity, and hope throughout our daily lives. The opportunity to replace the original cross arose after an inspection revealed the need to repair or replace the brickwork on the clock tower due to age and weather related wear and tear. The renovation began in the summer of 2024 and necessitated the removal of the cross in the process. As the original cross was also showing its age, a decision was made to replace it with a new larger cross that would be more prominent and inspiring. The new cross is 12' tall, 7' wide and 10" thick and consists of an inner core of steel and an outer covering of PVC. The cross was made by Mr. Nicholi of Architectural Fiberglass in Cleveland with the engineering assistance of Mark Enos of Danmark Engineering from Akron. The new cross was raised to its place of honor on June 16, 2025 by Dalad Construction of Independence, Ohio. To complete the renovation, the time worn clocks on both sides of the clock tower needed to be restored. The clock face markings on both clocks had faded over the years and the glass covering on one of the clocks had a hole in it. Wagner Electric Sign Company of Elyria was contracted to detail and repaint the facings on both clocks and install new glass coverings on each one. HMH Restoration of Cleveland placed the metal hour markers around the outside edges of the clock and completed the brickwork. The original cross has been refurbished and the administration is discussing how and where to display this important piece of Elyria Catholic history. Our thanks to Steven Komives from the Elyria District Catholic High School class of 1965 who gifted the new cross in memory of his parents, Steve & Bertha Komives. May all who gaze on this new addition to our campus be inspired and reminded of Christ’s presence in our lives and find peace and happiness.
