Vars farmers market idea shelved

Please note that the free space in the Community Calendar is for non- profit groups only, including sports clubs, school groups, and community service agencies. the proposal on the association’s website but “zero volunteers” resulting to set up an organizational committee. There is startup funding available from the City of Ottawa through its cultural sup- port program for a farmers market but one of the conditions is there must be an organizational committee or even a part- time project manager hired to look after setting up the venue, booking the vendors, and doing the necessary clerical work. “The idea is there,” said Jean Séguin, VCA president. “We haven’t shut it down.” The association will return to the idea in the fall and begin the planning process again. One point, both McCannell and Séguin noted, out of all the feedback received is that Vars should schedule its farmers market so that the event avoids having to compete on the same day and time as the large and successful one in nearby Cum- berland.

The Vars Community Association (VCA), in partnership with other groups, began looking into the feasibility of such a project for the village. In her report during the VCA’s April 19 regular meeting, Laurie McCannell reported lots of positive feedback to a request for comments about

Skatepark project rolls along vision@eap.on.ca Rockland

a proposal from Canadian Ramp Com- pany to supply and install a skatepark setup. The cost is budgeted at $39,536.23 plus HST. The skateboard park will be similar in concept to existing youth recreation facilities in the villages of Bourget, Alfred and other communities in the Prescott-Rus- sell region.

Before the summer is out, local skateboards and rollerbladers may have a new official home to call their own in Rockland. The Skatepark Committee has spent the past few years raising money to buy skatepark structures for set up in Simon Park. Now city council voted approval on
