Internet explorer urges parents to become cyberspace savvy for their children’s sake gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Hammond

Cyberspace can be a wild and wonderful place but there are some places where even angels would hesitate to venture and parents need to be ready to help their children explore the world of the Internet in safety. That is the main message from Karen Sparks, a specialist in Internet safety, during an evening information session for parents and students April 27 at Saint Francis Xa- vier Catholic High School. “I’ve grown up with it,” Sparks said. “There’s no doubt that we live in a wired society and it’s a digital world.” Sparks has worked with the Internet since 1996, and has since developed her own series of workshops and advisory programs for parents and children on Internet safety. Her own website, www.be- cyber-safe.com, provides information and advice on issues like cyberbullying, and also offers links to other websites that deal with other specific Internet problems like cyberfraud. Recent statistical surveys of Internet use have noted that the number of log-ins to the Net has grown from 361 million in 2000 to almost 2 trillion so far in 2012 alone. There are 3 billion Google search requests on an annual basis and the latest digital survey of cyberspace revealed almost 150 million blogs (cyber journals or diaries) online for anyone to read. Social networking has evolved from the original MySpace website with Facebook now the most popular and best-known global backfence neighbourhood online. Twitter, the newest social network, has become a regular part of almost anyone’s online life with 50 million “tweets” every day, or 600 every second, of short messages by people about what they are doing, who they are seeing, and what they are thinking about almost any possible topic.

Digital technology evolves almost faster than anyone can imagine and the online culture changes almost as soon as new gadgets become available. The cyberspace version of the “generation gap” shows up in the difference between how adults communicate with each other most often compared to how teenagers and children chat with their friends. “It’s the older generation who are sending emails,” Sparks said. “The younger generation are the ones texting.” The Internet is a permanent part of the world, Sparks said, and it can be a very useful tool for communication, getting in- formation, and helping family and friends stay in touch, and for creating a world community with a sharing of ideas and opinions. But, she noted, there are dark areas in cyberspace where sexual predators lurk looking for new victims, cyberbullies torture anyone they deem weak or different, and where organized crime is now operating with identity theft schemes and new electronic versions of old cons and scams to take advantage of individual in-

nocence or greed. “You have to think of the Internet as a whole other world,” Sparks said. “The best thing for you is to learn about it, know about it, and be able to talk to your kids about it.” One basic Internet safety tip Sparks offered was to keep the family computer in a common room area where it is visible and parents can see at a glance what website their children might be viewing when online. Sparks noted an increase in cyberbullying incidents, often with tragic consequences as some victims choose sui- cide as a final escape from their tormentors. She said the first rule for parents about online bullying is never be afraid to take action and to charge anyone guilty of bullying online. “Don’t be a bystander,” she said, adding that cyberbullies are not as shadowy or as smart they might like to think they are. “Cyberbullies can be traced by their IP (Internet provider) addresses,” she said. “They are not anonymous.”
